Hi my o/h wants to know about taking his das motorbike test, is he best to take it here before we go or wait and take it in victoria.

He can't seem to find any info on taking there, if taking it here does it transfer to a auzzie license when we move.

your help is much appreciated. Sam.

l would say if you can take it here.....

they are easier to transfer but has to be done in so many months... sorry a bit vague as it was all of last august we were out there and think uk has frozen brain....this was for WA... we ask a bike instructor we saw tutoring ... they seemed to have a long list of what and where and how when it came to passing bike tests.. but there again ... it has changed in the uk as well ... so depends where you want to spend the money!! l think he said... you do initial bike test for the small engine bike and then you had to go back in a years time and take another test if you wanted to upgrade.... here l think you pass bike test on small engine and then after 2 years you can move on to bigger bikes without a further bike test....l dunno hubby biker not me... l was just there for the ride... will try and find hubby and update if anything of value comes up...

OH had his bike licence in UK. When we went to Vic roads to change our driving licences he simply filled in the form and his bike licence was transferred as well. Vic roads don't actually do the bike training and testing for the licence (well they didn't last time we checked the site for licencing requirements), there are specialist companies who do it (DECA being one of them - I only know this because they do the HGV training as well).

I know this doesn't help you decide whether to get the licence in UK or here in Oz but I hope my little snippet of information is of some use!

Definitely do you DAS in the UK before you move. If you are over 21 you can do either a 3, 4 or 5 day course for between £400 - £600 (approx - depends on the company) and you will get a full bike licence once you pass your test, which is only 40 mins of riding with the examiner following. If you have CBT already then get it done in the UK. Even if you don't, then still do it in the UK. The DAS test is pretty simple provided you can ride a bike. The hardest elements are the emergency stop and the U-Turn, but if you have decent clutch control and are confident you will have no problems. Just don't forget to turn off your indicators! As soon as you pass you can ride whatever bike you want and it will be transfered to a full Victorian licence on arrival- you have 3 months I think to change it, but it is just filling out a form and paying your fee. If you wait until you're in Victoria before you do it, you will have to get your L's in Australia and only be able to ride a smaller CC bike until you get your P's and then you are restricted for about 2 years I think it still is. My mate is 34(ish) and did his bike licence in Vic and has been totally frustrated by having to ride around on a 250cc for quite a while! I really really recommend that if anyone wants a car or bike licence to get it done in the UK and not in Oz. It is far easier to transfer than do the test here. Also, because the majority of people in Oz drive, due to poorer or non-existent public transport, there is often a wait of several months before you can do a test! And the test is harder - I know a lot of people who have failed the first, second and even third attempt here, where-as everyone in the UK I know has passed first or second time. Small tip; if you are doing your bike test in the UK and don't already have a helmet, see if the training school can provide one, as you can't use a UK bike helmet in Australia as it doesn't have the right stamp! No point wasting money where you don't need to!

Hope this helps and makes sense!

I've been meaning to ask a similar question for a while.

I've just passed my DAS on Monday 7/4/08

I can't wait to have the Oz air rushing past me at high speed:jiggy:

In the QLD you just have it transfered with your car licence, but have a good think about it first if you dont need to ride on the road i wouldnt its bad. I would do track day or off rd i have had a race rep in uk for 20years, iom, cadwell, donington & this place is bad check out how many motobike deaths on goldcoast.

Hi there fellow two wheelers!

I agree with what everyone has generally said.... get it done in the UK and then just transfer it. Something further i would add is that get your DAS course done (as Taz said), but get it done in the UK before October 2008! they are changing the test in October to fall in line with European testing. This will mean there is an additional part to the test which is a cone course on a car park first. I tokk my DAS last summer and my instructor at the time was telling me that all the instructors hate the sound of the new rules because many test centers across the country will no longer be able to provide tests..... purely because they have not got the car park space to provide the new part of the test!!!!

This means it will be harder to get booked on a test as there will be limited places and i guess it will be more expensive as it is longer!

He also told me a rumour that they are going to make all new riders have 40 hours of tuition time before they can take the test! these must be logged and signed for by a tutor. Thats more time on a bike with an instructor and that = more money! This however was just a rumour!!!!

DSA - 2008 Motorcycle Test

I go to Melbournew in 2 weeks and will just transfer mine eventually. Riding on your british license is fine for the time being i believe

Hope this helps...... pass as fast as you can..... it will be the best thing you ever do!!!
