though if I was being pedantic, Oxford and Cambridge first played football in England. Not something they shout about now!

 

And even before then it was played in China and Middle East...great modern footballing cultures of course

DF used to live in Neutral Bay, but now lives in Georges Hall 2198 (where I will be moving to if DIBP would ever-so-kindly grant my visa! :wubclub:). I'm not sure if Georges Hall is way too far away to be counted as an actual Sydney suburb or not. :laugh:

Of course Georges Hall is a Sydney suburb! I'm just trying to think how I would get there before I Google it. Down the Hume Highway to Bass Hill then turn left? I think it's in the vicinity of Bankstown Airport? Residential area, nice homes, quite 'hilly.'

 

My brother does not really like sport as such. He said his first act as dictator of Australia would be to padlock all the AFL grounds shut (which would make for a short rule!) But his wife adores football (soccer & NRL) and hogs the TV all weekend, so he has acquired a certain knowledge from sitting next to her (and prejudices) - hate AFL, hate Canterbury Bankstown & Melbourne Storm, hate Queensland.

 

I do know a gay guy who LOVES sport, particularly AFL.

Georges Hall, a suburb of local government area City of Bankstown, is located 24 kilometres south-west of the Sydney central business district in the state of New South Wales, Australia, and is part of the South-western Sydney region.

Georges Hall is bounded by the Georges River in the west and Bankstown Airport in the south. The suburbs of Bass Hill and Condell Park lie to the north and east, respectively.

[h=2]History[edit source | edit][/h]Georges Hall was named after the house and farm owned by Captain George Johnson (1780–1823) called 'Georges Hall'. It was situated beside and Prospect Creek, near Henry Lawsons Drive. In 1809 it became an administrative centre, where it was used to conduct the census.

Garrison Point is a historically significant parkland. It obtained its name from the garrison of soldiers that were stationed here to ensure the safety of Major George Johnston as he conducted a census in the area. The park is now the local focus of annual Australia Day celebrations in the Bankstown area.^[2]

In 1796, George Bass, Matthew Flinders and the boy servant William Martin began an expedition to explore parts of the colony on a small boat called the Tom Thumb. They sailed into Botany Bay and explored the Georges River, twenty miles (32 km) beyond previous expeditions to the area that is now Garrison Point. For their exploration efforts Bass and Flinders were rewarded with 100-acre (0.40 km²) land grants in this area by Governor John Hunter.^[3]

Johnston received extensive land grants in areas of modern Petersham, Bankstown and Cabramatta. The suburb of Georges Hall takes its name from the farmhouse of the same name on land grants he received near the junction of the Georges River and Prospect Creek. This building still exists and is now one of Australia's oldest houses. Johnston's other grants included land which is now the suburb of Annandale, named for his property that was in turn named after the place of his birth. He and Esther Abrahams farmed and lived on this land with their children until the 1870s when it was sold and sub-divided for residential development. The main street of Annandale is named Johnston and the gates of their property now stand in the grounds of Annandale Public School.^[3]

[h=2]History[edit source | edit][/h]Rhodes was named after the home of an early resident, Thomas Walker (1791–1861), which was built on the north-eastern side of the peninsula. Walker named his property Rhodes after his grandmother's home, Rhodes Hall, in Leeds, England. The house was demolished in 1919, when the land was purchased by the John Darling Flour Mills, later owned by Allied Feeds Limited.^[5]

Industry invaded the once picturesque and heavily forested isthmus in 1911 when Messrs. G & C. Hoskins established a large foundry specialising in the manufacture of cast iron pipes for gas and city water reticulation purposes. In 1930 their operations moved to Port Kembla, and in 1935 the site was taken over by CSR.^[6] During the period from about 1930 to the mid-1980s, the western part of the suburb between Homebush Bay and the railway line was taken up by chemical manufacturing. The main manufacturers were Berger Paints, CSR Chemicals,^[7] Union Carbide,^[8] and Allied Feeds.^[9][10]

The former Tullochs Limited Phoenix Iron Works were located between the railway line and Concord Road, south of Mary Street. They gave their name to Tulloch Avenue and Phoenix Avenue. This is now the site of the Hewlett Packard offices in Sydney. Tullochs manufactured much of the rolling stock for what is now Sydney Trains.

 

This is somewhere that I must visit too near Rhodes.

 

The Kokoda Track Memorial Walkway is a memorial walking track located in the suburb of Concord West, Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. It is located along the foreshore of shores of Brays Bay on the Parramatta River, and is a unique tribute to the Australian troops who fought in the World War II Papua-New Guinea campaign of July 1942 till January 1943.

[h=2]Description[edit source | edit][/h]The walkway consists of more than 800 metres of pathway, starting from Concord Repatriation General Hospital to Rhodes railway station.^[1] Along the walkway visitors will see 22 information stations or plaques, which are supplemented with an audio narrative. Each Station describes a significant place or engagement of the campaign which visitors can hear and read, with photographs, maps and interviews. An Educational Resource Centre is also located on the route of the walkway where visitors can further study the events during the Papua-New Guinea campaign and review a calendar of annual events taking place at the Walkway.

At the centre of the walkway is a series of granite walls on which images of the New Guinea Campaign have been sandblasted. A cascading waterfall alongside the granite walls forms a part of the Centrepiece,

A lush tropical vegetation envionment has been planted, simulating the conditions of the original Kokoda Track. The Mangrove timber boardwalk meanders through part of the simulated forest.

[h=2]Rose Garden and Entry Area[edit source | edit][/h]An entrance featuring two semi-circular memorial walls amongst a bed of roses. Plaques dedicated to the memory of individuals who served in the war are mounted on the surrounding walls. The walkway is linked to the Rose Garden by the Bruce Kingsbury V.C. Path.

[h=2]History[edit source | edit][/h]Construction of the Kokoda Track Memorial Walkway commenced in 1994 and was designed by DM Taylor Landscape Architect Pty Ltd.^[2] The walkway was opened on 3 October 1996 by the Hon Bruce Scott MP.

In July 2010, the walkway was vandalised with spray paint and a blunt object, causing up to $40,000 of damage

I know Revesby very well, as my brother and his family have been in 2213 - Picnic Point - for the past twenty four years, and I've grown to like the area myself. I have always had him on my spreadsheet, but never included it here. I like to stop at a deli/cafe in that strip where Gloria Jeans is, for a sandwich and coffee. I used to get the train over to East Hills, and my brother or his wife would pick me up outside the pub, usually with his kids strapped in the back in their kiddie seats. I drive over now, though.

 

Have you joined any of the clubs? Revesby Workers and/or Panania Diggers. The Diggers is family friendly. I used to be a member of both, but just keep my Revesby Workers one now. RWC is more like a cruise ship or a hotel, too big for me, in a way. My brother's wife goes to the gym at Panania Diggers.

 

They have a nice home, and there is a bus service, but you still need a car. It's a good half an hour walk to any of the stations, which is OK when you are coming home, and maybe need the exercise, but just adds to the commute. It's the only thing I don't like about the area!

Each time, I research a suburb, I find out something new, in this case, a house called 'The Pah' which is still there, so next time I go over there, I shall look for it.

 

Revesby was named in 1913 in honour of Sir Joseph Banks, the famous botanist who sailed with Captain James Cook on the Endeavour, when he reached the east coast of Australia in 1770. Banks had inherited his father’s estate of Revesby Abbey, in Lincolnshire, England, so he was known as the Squire of Revesby. He is also commemorated in the Sir Joseph Banks High School in Turvey Street.

George Johnston, an officer of marines who had arrived on the First Fleet was granted land in this area in 1804. His wife Esther Julian, who had arrived as a convict on the same ship in 1788 was granted 570 acres (2.3 km²) in 1813. The earliest landowners did not reside in the area. The only mansion built in the early days was 'The Pah' on Tompson Road. It was built in 1896-97 by Samuel John Hales on 14 acres (57,000 m²) that had been purchased from the Weston estate. The property was subdivided in 1926 but the house remains.

The first school opened as Bankstown South in 1896; now known as Revesby Public School. The railway station opened on 21 December 1931. The local post office opened in 1955.^[1]
