I guess I don't count as will be working and living in the city (Kent street initially)

I too remember the "glory" days of Shef Wed ;) John Sheridan, Mark Bright, Des Walker et al!

Pfirst game I ever went to was with my Dad at Stamford Bridge, Chelsea vs Shef Utd - the game where Hoddle scored to send the Blades out of the Prem in 93/94 .... Sorry for bringing up painful memories!

but my team has been Arsenal since 92

That's OK. Even Gooners are welcome on my spreadsheet - except tonight of course!

Good man. Beating ManYoo in the League Cup final has to be the stand out from that era. Or perhaps beating the blunts at Wembley in the semis of the FA Cup. Went to that with loads of mates from Sheff, one Blade had to go in with us in the Wednesday end because of how many tickets we had, he was spewing :D

Sadly that era was where the rot set in - "Tricky Trev" signing way too many players on mega salaries who didn't give a toss (Carbone, Di Canio etc). The only way was down :(

**Cough, spit***

I'll let you off....have had a soft spot for Arsenal throughout the Wenger days, there's no one better at winkling out hidden or unused talent and developing it into brilliance (Henry, Anelka, Petit, etc etc). And I have a lot of time for the club, proper support, they've stayed local despite redevelopment, the Emirates is a great stadium I reckon, they haven't sold out or got loaded up with debt, etc etc. Plus I hate Tottenham - the most deluded fan this side of Wolverhampton, still believing they're one of the "big teams" - sorry Dave

I did not know until I Googled 'Westmead' that it and 'Northmead' were both part of the Domain of Government House!

It's good, innit? You live and learn

One thing I don't buy into here is the "no history" slight. It might not be so obvious in the built environment (although there's plenty of that as well if you want to look) but there are stories everywhere

I watched this series last year:

http://www.historychannel.com.au/tv-shows/show-details.aspx?id=1061

They were a bit cheesy but a load of local historical interest nonetheless

Different things grab different people....In Sydney the two historical museums/exhibits that have grabbed me the most are the Sydney Observatory - it's such a lovely building in such a great spot - and specifically the copy of Matthew Flinders's map from his circumnavigation of Australia in 1801. Astonishing accuracy - you'll struggle to tell it from a modern map - from using sextants and chronometers. The other one is the archive of photographs from the bridge construction era in the Museum of Sydney. Because I am an engineer, and therefore a sucker for stuff like tyhat

Yes, people who say that Australia has no (European) history may as well be saying that nothing that mattered happened after 1770 which is patently BS.

We are talking about the years of the French and American Revolutions, Napoleonic Wars, Crimea, American Civil War, etc etc. And as I've said many times, many of the historical writers we love so much - Dickens, Trollope, Austen, Brontes, are all a product of the years after Australia was colonised.

So what if Australia has no medieval history!?

The original road from Sydney to South Head - Watsons Bay I mean, was constructed in 1811 - over 200 years ago now! Hyde Park Barracks - not been there yet - built 1817 L Macquarie. So many wonderful churches built by the convict architect ?Francis Greenaway too.

Haha...well you should be having a bit of champers to celebrate then! Doubt we'll make the top 3/4 now...unless Benitez unleashes the red mist and keeps being himself.

Yeah, it was sad to see Shef Wed go down...too much history to stay out. Teams like Shef Wed, Forest and Wolves should be in the prem on their history alone...also, forgot to mention Chris Waddle, one of my fave players of the era and Chris Woods, England's no.1! Great team

agreed...have loved the last 20 years at Arsenal...part of me once to see a change though, something's not right. Fans are deluded if they think we should be champions...but a club like Arsenal should be de facto top 3. Hopefully the billionaires will get bored soon and buy some 20 20 teams...

I was wearing my 'lucky' 'East Belfast Spurs Supporters Club' shirt that my Gooner mate Seamus brought me back from NI at Xmas. His Dad and two of his bros are Yids! Thanks for reminding me to text him, by the way! I favour a simple 'He, He, He!'

If you're going on history then I'm afraid Sheffield United need to be in that list being the oldest stand alone club in England (formed 1889 on what is now the Crucible). Unfortunately though the football league doesn't work like that.....

Eh? Notts County, Stoke, anyone? And a few others to boot

Isn't it Notts County? Incidentally when Juventus opened their new stadium recently(ish) they could have invited any team in the world to play the first match but they invited Notts County as they'd given them their strip when Juve were first formed. Apparently hosted them really well. The Italian teams seem to have a real understanding of football history which is missing in Britain.

Ok, had a dig and see your point. I was under the impression SUFC was formerly ** but as it looks like * still exist then it's not quite the same (although it seems that they did help form SUFC). The link is there, albeit tenuous!

The original point was on history of clubs so Stoke and Notts County definitely need to be added to the others mentioned above. What would the league look like then, if based on founding years?

Sorry, meant to add SUFC were formerly Sheffield Football Club, formed in 1857.

Totally wrong Sheffield ** are an entirely different team , although it pains me to say , the piggies Sheff Wendy were formed first , they played at Bramall lane. When the buggered off to Olive grove , the members of the cricket club created a new side , to play at the lane .

Sheffield ** not Sheffield United.

(aside: what's wrong with putting F and C together?)

The two naughtiest words in the English language although I have NEVER heard of them being used as initials. It is frustrating as you cannot refer to Sydney (F)ootball ©lub but its correct name.

I think I may have to add a couple of fields to my spreadsheet, listing our favourite Aussie football teams (any code.)

That debate about 'oldest football clubs' is interesting too. I am sure I read somewhere that most football codes and clubs developed in the 19th century during the change from agrarian to industrial economies so that men could continue to 'hunt and gather??????'
