Pet Insurance for dogs in Australia

Recommended Posts

Hi

I was wondering if anyone could give me an idea of whether pet insurance is as available in Australia as it is here in the UK?

We have a minature schnauser and working cocker spaniel that we intend to ship with me when we migrate and would be keen to understand whether we can insure them when we get them over and how much it might cost compared to the Uk?

The dogs are 6 and 4 yrs old.

Thanks in advance.

Andrew

It most definitely is.

Just use a quick online search to get a heap of companies listed. Something like 'pet insurance, Australia' will do it.

I found Woolworths pet insurance to be pretty good price wise compared to others

If you don't go after what you want, you'll never have it. If you don't ask, the answer is always no. If you don't step forward, you're always in the same place...

If you get a chance, take it, If it changes your life, let it. Nobody said it would be easy they just said it would be worth it...

From the searches Ive come across the only difference is that the insurance companies pay 80 percent of the claim, however much it is, rather than using excess amounts like in the UK. We pay $48 a month for our puppy.

Bring thier vets paperwork as like any insurance there are pre-existing conditions exclusions

We brought our cocker many years ago and poor fella hated the heat and kept getting canker at one point so badly the vet shave his ears and stitched them together on the top of his head ! He got over it but needed a lot of attention

That doesnt sound very pleasant for the pup! My cocker loves to lie around outside when it is hot here, but the heat in Australia may test her. I doubt we will get the Schnauser out of the house as he is the laziest dog you will ever meet.

I insured with Petsecure when we arrived last year and I would not recommend them, although they seemed good on paper. Having now needed to submit claims I am finding their customer services telephone response times very poor. I write this as I've been on hold for the last 33 minutes and counting, and calls I've made to them in the past month have been similar. We first submitted a claim posted on 26 January, with the first acknowledgment from them dated 26 February. They did not respond to emails I sent during that time, and did not call back to follow up when they said they would. My Aussie vet has said that her impression is that pet insurance companies seem to offer a less good service here than in the UK.

I'm considering changing companies - does anyone have any good experiences to share?
