I will hopefully be moving to Brissy in Jan 2014. Late 20's on my own but have a friend out there from school. Just awaiting my visa to come through now, been waiting around 5 weeks but medical and pcc is done. Could be a few more months yet before the golden email though....

Hi, we ( that is me and hubby, son 14 & daughter 9) are hoping to move over early mid 2014, just need to get the P.R visa granted, sell the house & get the dog sorted ! we are also from Yorkshire, and will be looking to meet up and make friends .We will be going over blind no jobs, but hopefully manage to secure a rental property beforehand ( that's a must really)We have been looking at Upper Coomera / Nerang areas. if anybody has any views over these areas / schools in the area that would be appreciated.

my husband is a First class metal machinist / CNC programmer. and i work in Administration.

I have been looking on the job sites but it's looking doubtful that we will be able to secure a job before we arrive, so we will need to hit the ground running .....

We will be doing the same, as it looks unlikely we'll get a job before we go so hitting the ground running when we arrive (jetlag and all). The plan at the moment is to rent a holiday rental for the first 3/4 weeks then secure something a little more permanent. Hoping to get out there Feb 2014 assuming the visa finally arrives before then...

Hi both!

My partner and I will (hopefully) be heading out in early spring 2014 - we are currently living in the Forest of Dean. We'll be living on the Gold Coast but its likely ill be working in Brisbane. We are late 20's early 30's and no kids (except for the cats and the pup!). Im a Marketing Specialist and he is a DR Consultant.

Good luck with your move and stay in touch - be good to have some familiarity when we get out there!

Good luck with your move Samdom, I think anyone is lucky to get out of Blackpool (I'm saying that as I was brought up there), its a fantastic thing to do for your children. I wish you all the best! x

Thanks Jac, your right but its weird I am going to miss some parts like, Stanley Park and the Prom, even the illumi's....however I'm sure it's completely normal and even like shedding a skin in a lot of ways.

We are absolutely giddy about the new opportunities and new places we are all about to encounter, and I'm really looking forward to settling in, even with a few bumps in the road.

Hows your course/plans going?

It says a lot about Blackpuddle that you will miss Stanley park...........side-stepping the goose shlt and the squashed maggots left by the fishos. TBH though, I have fond memories of the place where, as a lad, we used to jump into the boats that others had dumped rather than them taking 'em back and paying the excess charges for staying out longer than they should.

Still got a pic of the place after all these years

... and possible wait till children are older do less child care costs and re-evaluate. Hope everyone else gets to where they want to be! Good luck x

Just as a FYI do you know you get at least half your child care costs back from the govt up to $7500 per year per child if on PR ? We have one of ours in 2 days per week and it costs us $40 per day.

Stanley Park does have some good memories, I remember in Scouting every year doing an annual raft building race across the lake and I have a huge phobia of fish and falling in the dark murky water! No matter how many times people tried attacking our raft or how our raft was falling apart I never did fall in. The fear of that water somehow kept me afloat whilst 99% of the others sunk!

Cross Country on a Sunday morning with school every month, that was really good. Also reminds me of the mornings my family actually came to watch me running in all weathers!

We lived just behind the Norbreck Castle and a 2 minute walk to Norbreck beach so the walks round there up to Cleveleys and the sunsets were amazing. We do miss that. We used to get fish and chips from the Cleveley's bus station chippy and sit on the prom by Anchorsolme park with our tea watching the sun set on a Friday evening.

However, the main memories now that stick in my head is the unemployment, the fear of being mugged in places (I used to finish work at 6am on a weekend near central drive and have to hand around for the first bus at 6:50pm), a group of stag doo men flashing my 4 year old daughter and I in their kilts in the city centre at 8:50am on a Saturday morning!!! To get a reasonable job I had to work in Lytham which involved a 90 minute bus commute each day on the worlds oldest, smelliest buses.

I am sure every place has positives and negatives as I am sure Oz will have too, I just hope that my children have more opportunities and less negatives in Australia if I choose the place well. I really wouldn't want my children growing up in Blackpool at the moment, not unless it was to change dramatically.

Hi Jac, sounds like great times when you were young, but your absolutely right, I don't want my children here any longer either...the council are trying v. hard to improve the town center and a lot of money has gone into regeneration, but the problems are still the same. V few families come on holiday here every year is fewer than the last..mainly drunken and drugged stagg and hens. A massive drinking culture and drugs are rife! I know previously ive been challenged on here by people who have immigrated to Oz and said its just as bad as here, however ive stayed for several weeks and lookde very hard and not seen anything like the same level. I'm sure there are problems similar in oz but I feel sure the levels aren't yet up to Blackpool standards.

I truly love this town but we want our children to have broader opportunities and an outdoor lifestyle with my family in oz (I have a sister and extended family over there) seems like the best place to try right now!

Lifes an adventure eh!! bring it on!!

Around Stanley park? St Joseph's College?

Yes, amazing sunsets, and that part of the prom was pretty "sedate" as far as visitors go. I worked at Norbreck Nurseries and Aquatics on Shirley Crescent..............I don't know your age but it backed onto "Ena Sharples" house of Corrie fame. I was also the colour sgt at the RM detachment at HMS Penelope at the roundabout opposite the cop shop on Red Bank Rd .

That wasn't Premium Bonds was it? My OH's first job on leaving the navy was there at Lytham.............a helicopter mechanic and all she could get was the bottom job in the civil service............she cycled from Bispham to there, every day, just to put a crust on the table...................and people wonder why we emigrated!

I am sure every place has positives and negatives as I am sure Oz will have too, I just hope that my children have more opportunities and less negatives in Australia if I choose the place well. I doubt it will............they can spend millions tarting up the sea front for the visitors but try finding a public toilet that's open for the residents, along that same tarted up seafront, after the illuminations are over. Blackpool has always survived via it's income from outsiders...............those born and bred there count for nothing

Johndoe, It was indeed Sunday morning on Stanley Park around the big field several times. Bit boring but still a good memory.

I remember you telling me about your days at the Royal Marines unit on the roundabout, my mums house is next to the garage across the road. I had a friend there but I don't think she was there at the same time as you.

Lytham was Guardian Pensions although my hubby did a stint at premium bonds. Everyone starts at the bottom and that is unfortunately classed as a good career in Blackpool. There is no business at all.

I did love the beach at Norbreck, it was as you say quiet and sedate. Fab for walking your dog although a few months ago my dad was walking his golden retriever when a group of teenagers beat him up for no reason and their girlfriends recorded it on their phones. Disgusting.

Unless you have lived in a seaside town as run down as Blackpool then no one could preach to me that Australia is the same. Of course there is a drinking and drugs culture everywhere but Blackpool is the most depressing place in the country (officially) and even at school we were not given the skills to advance.

Sam, Ron Bell is not only a good mate of mine, he's also an ex Royal Marine mate and the father of my daughter-in-law.................he's a blue blood tory from working class stock................a Mason even.........I'm a die hard socialist from non-working class stock...............that doesn't detract from our friendship, although it makes for lively conversation when we've both had a few bevvies.....................he has no "class"...............he sees only problems that need sorting, so if you ever have a need, look him up and quote me.........google his name and "royal marines" and you will appreciate his total dedication to "non political" sorting of problems. Although his focus may be on ex-ervicemen, and their needs, it is never at the expense of hiis constituents, or those outside the forces who seek his help..................basically................a good (humanitarian) bloke who will do his best for anyone in strife, despte their political persuasion.................unlike most councillors/politicians

Hello fellow poms!

We are a married couple in our late 20's, no kids yet and are hoping to make the big move to brisbane next year (around April time)! Would like to meet likeminded people before we move! I am a general nurse who works in acute surgery and the hubby works in retail management (hoping to apply for the police down under).

We currently live in Yorkshire. Would love to hear from fellow poms who will be settling in and looking for new friends around that time!!

Hope to get some responses!

Hello everyone!!

I visited Brisbane last year and loved it! So will definitely be moving around the Brisbane/sunshine coast area! I am now currently applying for nursing registration over there, which I believe will take around 6 weeks once all the paperwork is sent off. After this I can start job hunting and once a job is secure will make the big move!! Exciting stuff!!!

Hope you are all well. Has anyone made any exciting progress?

Hi Fliss,

Ive had some success with offers of casual pool work, which TBH im thrilled with as Ive found that a lot of employers will only seriously look at my C.V when I'm on aussie soil. Although a couple of phone calls (at 5.00am!) have really paid off. Even though we're not actually moving till June ive applied for tons of jobs to simply test the water really and have had lovely feedback, one guy said he really like my C.V but needed to fill the vacancy right now but wanted to offer me a pool position and then see whats available when we arrive and have all settled in...thats why I'm thrilled because casual work, shifts that suit me will be a great way to suss out the hospitals I want to apply to and also work around my kids so that they can settle into school....so as my sister always says! Its all good!!

I have a pal who moved over to Perth last year and she joined HCA - health care australia agency. Ive been in touch and they have been really helpful, I'm interviewing with them when we go over and they have lots of work available in Brissy/Ipswich area too....so I think as long as your happy to try different areas/wards/aged care homes/specialisms etc I'm sure we'll be fine.

All the negativity that I was hearing around nurse recruitment had me really worried, but it would seem to be picking up in the areas I'm looking for sure.

Good Luck!!

Sam

Hi, we are due to move over in March, very excited but getting very hectic with just a couple of months to go, and with a 4month old and 1 year old in tow! Hubby has a job in carseldine so we are looking around this area for rentals. Does anyone know of any short term rental places for when we arrive?? Needed for 4-6 weeks, north of the CBD.
