Glastocat
We are emigrating to Perth next month. My husband was born in Oz and lived there until he was seven years old. My son has a passport by descent, and I will have a Spouse visa (cat 100). We are trying to get work straight away and we have some savings to fall back on. I also know as I am a dependant spouse I cant claim anything until two years is up, and hopefully I will be gainfully employed by then anyway. But is my husband entitled to claim anything? Obviously we hope not to have to, but it would be useful to know the facts just in case. And please dont accuse us of being scroungers, we are moving to get employment as my husband was made redundant last year and not working is driving him crazy!:arghh:
Guest The Pom Queen
If your husband and son are citizens yes they can. We had someone stay with us who signed on straight away who hadn't lived in the country for probably 10 years, they are still claiming even though they are back in the UK. Do you have any idea what they would be entitled to? We have enough money to do us for a while, and obviously hope we won't need to claim at all, but would like to know what fall back we have if things don't work out for us. They are both citizens, but my son is only 11, so won't be claiming for anything!)
Playghirl
I d on't know enough about it as had a job to come to , but you should qualify for family allowance at the very least! Saying that it is all a palaver to get. Lol. When you first arrive get into the centrelink with all your families IDs and begin the process of applying for Medicare, also get hubby back on the electoral roll(( you won't be able to until/ unless you get citizenship) Centrelink will let you k ow what you are e titled to. Best of luck with the move and job getting!!
Ken
All permanent residents (whether citizens or not) are eligible for Family Benefit A and Family Benefit B (and the associated rent allowance) if they have dependent children. Note however that these benefits are all means tested (based on family income not assets) so anyone on an average salary doesn't get anything - but if you don't manage to find jobs you'll certainly qualify.
