State sponsorship vs. 189 visa for accountant (60 points)

Hi everyone,

So here is my story. I'm currently in Australia. I studied for 2 years in Melbourne, accounting degree. Just graduated. I got 60 points as per the point test. Details as following:

Nominated occupation: General Accountant

Age: 27

Education: Master of Professional Accounting (2 years study)

IELTS: 7.5 (L9, R9, W7.5, S8.5)

CPA assessment: Positive

No work experience claimed

Med check: Done .

Current visa status: Bridging visa for 485 (skilled graduates). CO allocated.

Now, my agency said that I have two options, one is the 189 visa and one is 190 with NSW sponsorship since they no long require any work experience!! They told me that visa 189 EOI for accountant with only 60 points is very risky and there is a good chance that I will never make it to the invitation. Is this true? Because of this advice, I went ahead and applied for NSW sponsorship. All required documents were sent on 3/12/2012. Like a lot of other people on this forum, I am still waiting for the acknowledgement letter from the NSW government.

I have not lodged any EOI, especially 189 one, because my agency suggested that doing so would signal the NSW government that I am playing them, which would in turn lead to a failure of my case. Again, is this true? I heard people applying for SA got this issue but I'm not sure about NSW. I also read on here that some accountants with 60 points have successfully got invited for 189. This makes me want to try for 189 instead of 190 because of the freedom of living location.

In short, at the moment I am a little confused. My question is, why waiting for NSW approval, should I lodge my EOI for 189 as well? I am a little wary that if my state sponsorship is rejected after 2-3 months, I would waste a lot of time and the accounting occupation ceiling would be filled up by then.

Please kindly advise me. Any input would be highly appreciated.

Cheers,

Andy

Hi mate,

If you were to retake the IELTS test and score 8,8,8,8 or better, this would kick you up to 70 points...

Hey mate,

thanks for your reply. I kinda gave up on the 8 band ielts. I took it 4 times already. And sat an ielts course as well. Couldnt get my writing score to 8...

Hi,

it seems that your agent is playing it safe but not telling lies !!!

if you look at the following link it will show you the reports produced by skillselect showing the distribution of invites vs points scored for december.

http://www.immi.gov.au/skills/skillselect/index/reports/skillselect-invitations-to-apply-to-migrate-3-december-2012-results/

Looking on the reports tab on the skillselect page shows the same reports for each application round and all of those since november have had significant numbers of 60 pointers invited. This can change however, although early invite rounds wer for small numbers of applicants so of course those with higher points get asked first.

I got invited in the december 03 round with 65 points, but over 600 60's were invited. Now it looks like you are getting the SS you may as well use it. Given you are borderline its probably better you use the SS.

Good Luck.

Tony

IELTS 27/4/12 R9L9S9W8 --- EA CDR Submitted 27/7/12 - Positive 19/12/12 (Engineering Technologist)

EOI 27/11/12 - Invite 03/12/12 (65 Points) --- 189 Visa Paperwork to MARA Agent 10/12/12

189 Visa Submitted - Shortly

Thanks for the input Tony! I will probably commit to the SS then. I hope i get it though. Any chance they reject me because there are more qualified candidates?

Andy,

the way i understand it if you have state sponsorship your number of points becomes irrelevant. All you need is the minimum of 60. As far as i know for the state sponsorship again points are irrelevant, all you need is to meet the criteria and have a profession that is on the SOL list. Equally the quota for that profession must not have been filled for the year.

Cheers

Yes you're right in saying that as long as you hit the 60 points then you could get SS invite.

But. SS is not that straight forward. Each state had its own conditions you have to meet before they will sponsor you. Generally they need to know that you've researched their state and want reasons why you want to move there and what areas you've looked into. From the states I looked into they want evidence of your assets and funds available to support yourself if you need to spend time job hunting. They might also want evidence of a job offer or strong interest in you from an employer. And they don't like a load of blurb you've found online and just copied in.

I'm not trying to put you off, merely highlighting the fact that its not just a case if ticking a box marked Victoria and then sitting back and waiting.

All the best

Tony, gbuss, thanks for the advice mates! I think you guys are right, SS is not as easy as one may think. When I first applied for SS NSW, I did thought for a moment that it is guaranteed because I met the minimum requirements. And that I just have to wait a few months now.

To show that I am in good faith and committed to the NSW state, I was thinking of moving there right now, before the SS was granted. I can let the government know that I have moved to NSW and started looking for jobs. What do you guys think? Is it too crazy? Would they care enough to consider it a "plus" for my application?

@jenlocsin: my migration agency is Newland Migration, in Melbourne. Google them if you are interested. They are quite careful with your documents and advices. Plus they will do everything for you. You just have to decide on the options they gave you. I don't even know how to do occupation assessment or even the NPC... lol... I guess they spoiled me.

Hi Lou, I noticed from your timeline that you recently received ur skill assessment from CPA. Could you pls tell me how much fees u have paid to CPA for the assessment. Asking coz I sent off mine to CPA yesterday and paid AUD445 which was mentioned in the PDF application form I downloaded from CPA website on 7th April. Today I noticed a different form in the CPA website with 475AUD fee mentioned on it. I probably made a big mess here.

It was Aud475 but we completed the application online and paid online. CPA then gave us a reference and we printed the application and sent it with documentation to their London office who check it over then send it on to Melbourne. We ended up opting just to have my hubbies skills assessed as although we are both qualified accountants there was no sense in us spending another Aud475 to get mine assessed as we had 60 points.

Don't know whats gonna happen to my application then as I only have paid 445aud. Will ring up CPA today. By the way, did ur husband receive an invitation in the last round on 1 April? It will be comforting to know that applicants with 60 points get invited quickly as well.

Yes he did get invited on 1 April. In the last 2 rounds DIAC invited EVERYONE who had submitted an EOI on 60 points. They didn't quite meet their quota for one round and carried what was left over inviting slightly more in the next. We could have got 65 by having my skills assessed but I'd been watching the results from previous rounds and knew it wasn't worth it.

Thats great! I was also thinking of doing IELTS again to increase my points but guess this will not be required anymore, at least for now.

Hi lou im just wondering if youre also on student visa before just like the thread starter?

I will be on the same route with andy by july and im wondering what happens if youre currently on bridging visa for 485 and tgen receive an invitation which will lead to another bridging visa. Ive read somewhere that it will become bridging visa c with no work rights. Is this really the case?

Hey guys,

It's been a while. Just wanna share my current migration status.

so i applied for NSW sponsorship on 4/12/12. Received acknowledgement on 19/2/13. Meanwhile, I applied for EOI with 60 points, accountant on 7/2/13, received invitation on 18/2/13. Submitted all docs including payments of 3060 dollars, meds, and form 80 on 24 Feb 13.

Now im just waiting for CO allocation for 189 and NSW approval. Regardless i think i will go for 189 since the state sponsorship takes wayyyyyy tooo loooonnggg.

when i got invited for EOI, they issued me a bridging visa, but they said that the bridging visa is not in effect since i alreadt have another visa to stay in Aus. But i am fully legal to work on these bridging visas. In fact i did get a job in accounting, and i'll be speaking at the CA career seminar tomorrow 17/4 in Melbourne. If anyone around attend it, maybe we can meet up and chat :)

Congrats Andy, that's such a great news. As I was reading through your earlier post, I was thinking you should have gone ahead with the EOI since there was nothing to loose. :-)

Can you share which Master course (and school) did you attend, and the job market for accountants right now? I am waiting for an invite this round Apr 22, and both hopeful and anxious about the next job hunt :D

I'm sure that you will get an invitation on the 22nd.

For my education, I did a master of prof accounting at Deakin uni.

There are always demands for accountants in the job market. However, the recuiters and companies always look for ones with accounting experience. They believe that the experience will help the new recruit pick up the work faster, which is true to a certain extent. So if you wanna have an easier time hunting for job, my suggestion is to put emphasize your resume and profile on your accounting experience. If u dont have any, tailor your profile more toward excel skills, numerial skills, analytical.... Or pick up some volunteer work :)

do you mean "accounting experience" or "local experience"? I have 6 years of management accounting (being both management accountant and senior financial analyst) experience, but not local experience. How would you see chances of getting accounting job i.e. not AP, AR or book-keeping within 6 months? Because that's how long I could survive :D
