Surfy Brit
Syndey is awsome i LOVE it! Hope you will too! Depends what you want in a place to live? The futher from the CBD and the sea the cheaper! I surf so picked to live near the beach and pay a premium, also worht considering travel times if your a plumber Sydney traffic is BUSY at rushhour! Good Luck
SydneyMiles
Brace yourself for the expense of Sydney. Rent is not cheap but jobs are easy to come by and well paid. I was paying $750 a fortnight in the Eastern suburbs... you can get way cheaper but more of a commute in.
Adam n
Well being a plumber I will traveling around to the jobs quit a lot won't just be one place of work but i would rather live not to far from beach but not to far from Centre but somewhere that I won't get ripped off for rent etc. and I've heard a lot about being expensive but if I earn a lot that's fine. There is usually a strong correlation between "cheapish" and "a dump" unfortunately. It is really hard to advise you based on the criteria you have given, there are hundreds of suburbs in Sydney, what features are you looking for? Surfy Brit
Hmmm estate agents also like to take the mic! I saw a lot of places in same area as mine an same price that were total dives! So keep looking! I pay $460 pw an that's northen beaches an a 2 bed flat my tip would be to bring rent receipts and or reference from letting agent in uk, I had tongue a copy of my job contract guess u won't have that! Be quick with applications look beat an clean when y view somewhere if u can? Also most places have viewings wed pm an sat an if u can go in the week and make an application then do! If u know anyone in Sydney maybe take them with u to view an if they are female all the better ( tightly or wrongly agents have a perception of what a 20 something male will do to the place a girl may make u look more house proud! An often there are 20 people at a viewing so making yourself look good could help! Good luck!
nataliem
Hi Adam, Wouldn't you want to house share? Then you can make friends too. Just look on flatmate finders and gumtree. Sydney isn't that big so if you're in the eastern suburbs you have bondi beach close by (plus bronte and coogee) and also go out in surry hills, the cross, darlinghurst and CBD. Where are you staying when you get here? Once you start looking around the city you will get an idea. My recommendation is bondi beach or the bondi junction. SydneyMiles
I house shared when I first came over. It has good sides. You can skip all the hassle of getting a lease, set up, etc. However, if you're used to having your own place it's a bit hit and miss who you end up with. I found that a lot of studios near the CBD were available for not much more money and with hindsight I would have been better off in one... although my flatmate turned out to be a kleptomaniac so maybe I am just bitter.
