Furnishing a place on a tight budget

We are moving over with our two young children in March. Or furniture here is not worth shipping over so we will be starting from scratch. Apart from gumtree are there any thrifty ways of tastefully furnishing our new place? We love vintage style things and wouldn't mind upcycling.

Ebay is brilliant in that area. I have got some brilliant bargains. I had to buy some stuff to do while my stuff is in the shipping, but to be honest, I wish I hadn't bothered shipping anything. I recommend watching items at first and seeing what they fetch. You will find the freedom items are more popular with more bidders, but you can get really lucky with some items, especially if it has been missed by others because of the time of day etc. . I got an immaculate small dining room suite for $30 which is as new. Items that are badly photographed or have a poor description tend to get missed. I got a Queen Miracoil Sleepmaster bed which had a terrible photo and only a couple of words description for $1. When I picked it up, it was new, it had just been leaning against a wall in a warehouse. I felt really guilty driving off with it tbh.

The thing is, if you're not keen on it, or you only need it temporarily, you can sell it again.

Best of luck

Garage sales, they happen all the time in Brisbane, just need to buy th local paper, or look up online. Get there early doors to get the best stuff. Most will advertise with a brief description of what kind of stuff their selling, e.g. kids toys/ clothes or house clearance etc.

In brisbane if you want new household goods i would Try super amart for prices and see what you think. It's decent quality furniture and reasonable price. Crazy clarks, stacks and dollars and sense . There shops where you can pick up cheap household goods.Kmart and Big W also good options. Jbhifi is good for electrical goods . If you no the shops to go to you can furnish a place quite cheap.

shops like lifeline and charity shops tend to mark up prices to high now for second hand goods. Shop, around and you can buy new.

Troll round your neighborhood with a Ute on council chuck out day. Youll be amazed at what people throw out and its all for free :-)

Lol! I know someone who furnished a full house by doing this!

You'll find fantastic furniture to be cheap

We bought a few bits from them but you get what you pay for

SuperAmart is better quality IMO

We bought most of our stuff from them when we moved here and it's all in great condition after nearly 3 years

Like others have said

Garage sales, Gumtree, Ebay

The classified ads in the local papers are full of second hand furniture. Also, we found a bi-weekly "For Sale" magazine in our local petrol station which was full of good quality bargains.

I'm not sure about Brisbane but our local tip has a recycling shop--lots of junk but we did find some good things. (The most useful being a box of power leads with kettle plugs at one end and Aussie plugs at the other.)

Finally, for things where you want to buy new, Fantastic Furniture seems to be the cheapest (but much of it is tat). Amart is more expensive (but far the the most pricey) but their stuff is pretty good--when they say solid wood they mean solid wood!

School Fetes often have Trash and Treasure areas that sell furniture, though the school fete season is generally during the winter months and you're arriving at the start of summer, so you may most of your items by then, but it might be worth browsing the fetes in your area when they start happening. Also Brisbane City Council does Kerbside Collections every year - timing of these depends on location in Brisbane. People put their large unwanted items on the kerb for collection. Then a lot of people drive around picking up the bits they want before the council trucks arrive and take it to the dump. There are also some local dump sites that have 'recycling stores' located nearby. I haven't been to any of these but my son was taken along with one and came back with some useful articles (for him), like a scooter etc. I'm sure they'd also have furniture as well. I know that there's a recycling depot at the Logan council dump, not so sure about Brisbane City Council but you could ring their general number and they'd tell you.

Have a look at Fantastic Furniture's cheap full house packages. The stuff is similar quality to Ikea, but its amazing what you get included.

For second hand, Gumtree, Facebook and Courier mail classifieds are your best bet. There is also 'Kerbside Collection' where people put stuff they dont want outside on the kerb, if it doesnt have a price attached its free.
