Guest gemma and simon
Hi, myself (27) and my fiance (33) are moving out to Perth in March on a 176 visa. Im a dietitian so due to havng to sit exams to get my degree recognised out there, am not able to line up a dietetic job before I go so im looking at other options. Simon is an accountant and has been advised that its unlikely he'd be offered a job while still living in the UK and so he's arranging agency interviews for when we arrive. I am now starting to panic at the prospect of arriving with no jobs secured and wondered if many others have done this/what you experiences were/ any advice you would give. We have some savings from the sale of our house but obviously dont want to spend all of those. I think the reality of what we are doing is just setting in ! If anyone else is moving out to Perth in March, it'd be great to catch up!
Incata
Hi Gemma My husband has just gone out to Perth and the kids and I are going in a couple of weeks time. Neither of us have jobs, although I have a telephone interview next week. I've got an interview with an agency in Perth sorted for 2 days after I arrive, so although I don't have a job yet, I am making inroads into making connections and finding people who may be able to help, which gives me a little confidence. It is scary though, but if when we get there neither of us have nothing after a couple of weeks, I will go get a job in a local supermarket to bring some money in (and get the discounts on food!) I can temp so am sure that if I can't get something in my field there will be plenty of agencies I can get temp work through. We are also on a 176 and are using savings to pay the first 6 months on a rental (hopefully if hubbie can sort something out in the next couple of weeks!) If not, he's bought a car and we will be sleeping in that! We have a friend with a shower, so we will be fine, and if they are out, we will go for a swim and use the showers at the local leisure centre. Where there is a will, there is a way. I'm viewing it as an adventure! I think my husband is viewing it as a pain in the ass, and is wishing that he had applied for jobs in advance (if he had just done what he was told and got on with it!!!) I've also been told there is little chance of me getting work before I get there but that doesn't mean I can't try and I can't get my CV out there. Very happy to meet up when you get out. I'll let you know if one of us secures a job shortly or whether you'll find me selling big macs and asking "Do you want fries with that!" :biglaugh: Don't worry too much. It will all work out! Best wishes Carolyn
nicolac34
I think plenty of people do come out here without jobs lined up - we did (although were on WHV's at the time, we have PR now) and we secured temp jobs within a few weeks of arriving. This was 18 months ago though, and the job market is at an all time low now. It really does depend on your skills and experience, but be prepared for it to be a hard slog. My OH has been out of work since the beginning of September and hasn't even had a sniff of a decent job in all that time - but if you've got the right skills and someone likes the look of your CV you might be one of the lucky ones! Rupert
I think most people who move over on one of the skilled migrant visas do not have jobs lined up.
sherylvet
We are planning on moving to Perth this year, I have a job lined up but not my partner. I know that he is really worried about it, but I think that as long as we have one income, we should be ok. I think it will be easier (I hope!) for him to get a job when we get there (he's a builder).

I believe the employment market has contracted. 'All time low' is an exaggeration I think - although I know the Brisbane area is suffering badly, unless someone can prove otherwise. lozzachino
We are moving end of april with no jobs. Plan to set up interviews if possible before we arrive. OH went for a week to do a reccie, way too short, and lined up 3 interviews. So have some hope really! Everyone we have spoken to from friends, family, recruiters and potential employers have said that once you are there you become a lot more marketable and you will get something. just have to keep the faith!!!! I am currently in Perth and due to sit the written exam in September. I was just wondering if you have any advice? I have been doing some revision but would love to hear your perspective on what to cover etc. Any help is greatly appreciated? have you been able to get work here yet? I know the job market is quite tough.
