karen hughes
Hi all, I am a nurse and looking to emmigrate to queensland with my family. My initial plan was to go out on a 457 visa so last August I applied for Nursing reg via AHPRA and was given Registration-in-principle pending a visa. I was then strongly advised not to go on a 457 visa and have decided to go on the 190 instead. I don't know where to go from here. I'm not sure whether I need to have another skills assessment done as I have already been assessed by Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia. My Registration-in Principle is valid until the 8th October 2013. I really don't want to use a company as they are quite expensive. If anybody can give me any advice I would be very grateful. Thanks Karen

lebourvellec
If you are looking to go to QLD, it would be best to go down the 189 route, QLD has only nominated 32 people for 190 since July, mainly due to how things are in QLD. http://www.immi.gov.au/skills/skillselect/index/reports/skillselect-invitations-to-apply-to-migrate-3-december-2012-results/ If you need the extra 5 points, it would be best to chose another state. If you have 60 points have competed the Skills Assessment by ANMC, you can lodge EOI, and wait for an invite.
Kel87
Hi Karen, i agree with lebour from what I've read, QLD health have a recruitment freeze on at the moment and you'll struggle to get state sponsership for the 190 visa as a nurse. You can apply for the 189 which is still a PR visa howevere it's independent meaning that if you go to QLD and can't get work you can move to another state. You need 60 points for the 189 without the extra 5 points frrom state sponsership. Even with 60 points tho it may take a while to get an invitation or it may not, it's my understanding that people with higher points in nursing will likely be invited ahead of people with 60 points. You say you had your skills assessed was this with ANMAC or just AHPRA? Did you do an IELTS- for a pr visa either 189/190 you need to get your skills assessed by ANMAC but first you must do an academic ielts and score 7s in all categories , or 8s in you need extra points for your visa. once you have these 2 completed you can then lodge an EOI (expression of interest) for whichever visa you choose. you await an invitation and when invited you have 60days to lodge your application. Once lodged you will then receive a case officer who will request all the other relevant things like medicals, police checks etc. pig your visa is granted its again my nderstanding that you have 12 months to validate it and then another 4 years after that to actually move. Not sure if it's 5 years after validating to move or 5 years in total from getting your visa. You can ofcourse move straight away. Good luck. Flathead
It may still be possible to get sponsorship by QLD health for regional areas but there are many local nurses looking for work and also thousands of graduates. Graduate schemes have also been affected by the cutbacks. It may be possible to get sponsored by a private hospital but you will be facing massive local competition.....and the oppportunities may only be in the back of beyond where no one else wants to work. An independent visa is the most sensible idea.....or apply to another state. Bear in mind...that is also what a lot of displaced and graduate Australian nurses are doing.....the most recent reference I gave to a Queensland graduate was for a graduate position in Perth ! karen hughes
Hi Kel 87, im still a bit confursd. So, even though i have had an assessment via Ahpra in accordance with the Health Practitioner Regulation National Law and been offerred in-principle registration, I need o have another assessment with AMNAC. Is the AHPRA one not sufficient in demonstating to immigration that i have the relevant skills and qualifications to practice as a nurse. I havn't done an ielts but I didn't think this was always necessary so long as you could prove that you have been taught and assessed using the english language for 5 years full time, I didn't need an ielts when i was assessed by AHPRA because I managed to obtain the proof required. Do both the 189 and 190 require an EOI, I assumed it was just the 190 that required the EOI. I thought that I would just be able to apply for a 189 following skills assessment. OMG its so confusing. Are all the links for all the forms on the forms on the DIAC website. Thanks everyone, i've probably got you all demented lol
karen hughes
Thanks, I think I will go down the 189 route when ive worked out where to begin lol. lebourvellec
You will need academic IELTS for ANMC
Kel87
Hi karen, it's very confusing! For a temporary visa like a working holiday etc you do not need a skills assesment by ANMAC just aphra, and for registration with ahpra, you do not need an ielts as long as you can prove you were taught in English etc, exactly as you have done. However for a Permenent visa, like an 189 (independent) or 190 (state sponsored) you must have a skills assesment, for nurses this is a skills assesment by ANMC (Australian nursing and midwifery council) in order to receive a skills assesment by them you must have completed an academic ielts and scored 7s in all catagories or 8s if you need the extra points, it doesn't matter whether you were taught in English or not. if you google, Australia visas skills select this should take to the page to see how many points you have. To gain a 189/190 you need minimum 60points, the more the better. For both of these visas the rough order you'll need to do things in is: 1.academic ielts score 7+ in all catagories. 2. Receive a skills asses, emt by ANMC 3. Place am expression of interest for your visa, if you wish the 190 you also need to apply for state sponsership. 4. Await an invite for the visa- if invited you have 60days to apply. 5. Once applied you will receive a case officer who will then request medicals and police check. 6. Await visa decision, if granted you'll have 12months to validate. Remeber tho that as you have your registration in principle from ahpra you will need to present in person to aphra to complete registration within 12months. Hope that helps a bit. Good luck. callthemidwife
Im a Midwife looking to relocate to NSW in 2014, Im going to be ready to send my application to AHPRA in a couple of weeks and will then apply for the 189/190 visa, im slightly confused (this seems a normal part of this process!) so is the Skills assessment done by ANMAC? Do I still need to do the IELTS even though i have 5 years + proof of study in English for 189/190 visa? is this affected by spouse status-im main visa applicant but my husband a teacher ie is it points based or is IELTS mandatory?? AHHHHHHH!! confused but motivated, appreciate all help :-) thanks x
Tafflass
AHPRA is the registration body, like the NMC in the UK, so in effect every nurse/midwife needs to register with them to be able to work. However in order to apply for a PR visa you need to have your skills assessed by ANMAC before you submit your EOI. See: http://www.anmac.org.au/international-services my skills assessment took about 7-8weeks....but sometimes they can take up to 12weeks.

Registration with AHPRA is only sufficient if you are going out on a temp Visa. For the 189/190 permanent Visa's you have to do a Full Skills Assessment through ANAMC which includes the academic version of the IELTS for which you need at least a 7 in all 4 components. Only when you get a positive Skills Assessment can you put in your EOI to the state in which you hope to live (if you are going down the state sponsored route). You will also need to register with AHPRA (which you have already done). In my case I have forwarded all my paperwork to ANMAC re my Skills Assessment and sit my IELTS this Thur (gulp). Once I get a positive Skills Assessment I will ask the ANMAC to forward my file (which they hold for 2 years) to AHPRA for registration. This is the info as I understand it, hope it helps! Kim Irvine
So can you send paperwork to anmac before sitting IELTs then? Hi, yes, this is what i have done to date: I applied and got a date for my IELTS, 18/4/2012. Read the info re the Skills Assessment thoroughly. I requested a copy of my Nursing syllabus to be sent from the University I trained at to ANMAC, directly. I requested the NMC send the verification info to ANMAC, directly. I applied and paid online for the Skills Assessment, $850 (about 7 weeks before IELTS date). A file is then opened on you and paperwork added as it arrives. The application form asks you when you requested the aforementioned info be sent, so you'll need to do that first. They e-mailed straight back a 'cover letter' with instructions. I spent the next few weeks gathering the info and paperwork requested which was signed last week by a Public Notary, £100, and posted off. I'm sure something will be missing or incorrect!! My IELTS results will be sent directly to ANMAC, let's hope I get what I need!! Hope this helps. Kim xx
