Shared or Full Container

I am looking for advice on shared containers really.

We are currently in Spain and the plan is to transport our goods back to the UK and put them in storage just before we are ready for a container (we would have our oak bed & kingsize mattress, sun loungers, tumble dryer, garden statues, armchair and boxes and lots of OH's tools and equipment. I have contacted a couple of the recommended shippers in the UK on PIO, but of course it is difficult for them to give a quote when (1) they cannot see the items and (2) I don't know for sure at the moment how much stuff we will have.

OH does not think we will have much stuff, not enough for a full container.

Have you shipped a part container? What were your experiences? Did you have to wait a long time as you needed to wait for the container to be filled up before it could leave?

I am trying to weigh up whether it would be more cost effective to have a full container and fill it up instead as some things are looking more expensive in Oz. We are selling our house furnished in Spain, but looking at furniture in the UK and Aus. The bits we like in the UK is working out cheaper than purchasing it in Aus.

Hi Candygirl, long time no speak. Its such a subjective subject but yes i would say fill a container especially if you can get get January sale stuff but at the same time Perth has many bargains. The 2nd hand market is great here, lots of Fifo familes practically giving away stuff, they have the money at the mo to buy new every few months so just want rid.

But... if your time strapped or cant be arsed to go looking then yes if your taking a 20ft or 40ft fill it with as much as you can.

We are a family of 5 that came with nowt, we now have a fully furnished house for less than $1000, thats settees (4), beds (4), coffee table (2), wardrobes (1), washing machine (1) BBQ(1) outside table and 6 chairs (1) plus cutlery, plates, glasses, bedside lamps, fans. Some of it was 2nd hand (but more or less brand new) most of it new from the abundance of cheap shops in Perth, but again only if you have the time and willpower to look

Yes.t if your taking what you want/need to live. We took a large Movecube, great service, you can fit loads but most of our stuff has ended up unopened in the magic/tardis cupboard.

IMO its not the expensve of Perth, just people dont have the time to look/shop around. But to some time is money, or time spent shopping is not time on the beach. I get that.

Another thing to remember is Oz houses aint the same as UK ones, Oz a lot more open plan and just bigger in general.

Personally i would say dont ship double beds/mattresses, bedding cos its hard to get UK double size out here. If you can get a queen/king in the sales buy it. Most Oz bdrooms comes with BIR, so no need to ship wardrobes

Hi Hon,

Thanks for the advice, much appreciated.

I can shop for the UK, Spain and Aus so that does not worry me at all:biggrin: and I am lucky in that the OH loves it as well so all good there.

What concerns me is that I don't want to not take things over and then find things are expensive or not to my taste and cannot get what I really want. I am a real cheapskate, so don't mind taking my time to hunt around for bargains either. I am not put off by secondhand bits, but OH won't go there, but then again he doesn't like Primarni whereas I should have shares in them:err:

I also wonder how long we would need to wait for the container if we did decide on a shared one. If we bought new stuff in the UK and then shipped it, would it be worth living with next to nothing until the container arrives which I think would be longer than normal as we would be at the mercy of the shipping company filling the container with two loads.

I have watched the video of the Seven Seas Move Cube. I like it a lot and think it is ideal, but I am defo taking my oak bed and that would not fit in there, so not an option for us sadly.

Anyone got a rough comparison on prices for shared/full 20 ft containers?

Thanks.

I think that is a good point Jake Max. It must make a difference to go with a Co who has an office nearby. I would suspect that it would save a lot of stress due to the time difference and trying to get hold of people. Thanks, I will remember to ask this when we are getting quotes in.

If you're going to be buying stuff to fill your container then I wouldn't bother - just buy it out here. Remember that the prices you'll see online aren't necessarily the prices you pay :) Haggle, haggle haggle

Plus it will mean you can get stuff that suits the house you're living in, suits the climate / 'culture' and will give you an excuse to explore the area while you're shopping.

(Sorry just got the giggles - Satch the labrador has decided that Siena's playmat is the place she must sleep..... large lab squeezed onto small playmat is quite bizarre .... siena's in her cot so don't panic)
