Guest
Although we decided a couple of years back that we were going to up sticks to Aus, until 2013 actually ticked round, it was still something that was very much lurking in the background, slowing creeping round. Back in 2011, 2013 was the year we decided on as being the best time in the not too distant future. Son would be able to go into school then (started Sept 2012 in UK but is a late spring baby so would have had to have waited almost a year longer before starting in Aus), I would be free to work also then and it seemed a good time frame to allow us to wrap up this stage of our lives in the UK. We had time to do some things for ourselves, hubby to reach some personal and professional goals, me, well, I've had time to work on me Us as a couple, still some things we'd like to happen but not living life on hold for that, ploughing on with our desire to move. We've gotten on and lived our lives and lo, here we are, 2013 has arrived and it hardly seems like 5 minutes ago we were talking about moving to Aus (for hubby moving home) and all the reasons why we would like to go (and reasons to stay). And lo, my visa application is pretty much all ready to be mailed off (just waiting for a couple of stat decs to arrive and my documents certified next week) and its done. Medical and police check to follow but not worried about either of those. Then of course, the waiting begins till visa is approved. I'm good at waiting. Breaking it down into manageable chunks of time works best for me. I'm working lots atm so keeping busy that way is proving good. I am finally allowing myself to feel excited about it. To think of it in more than just practical terms and research into shipping, insurance, visa and all the rest. I've already started having a sort out of the house since January 1 came round. Am planning to work on a room a month for the next 4-5 months and wade through everything. Get rid of what we know we defo no longer need or have use for (nor want to take), work out the things we do plan to ship and the things to be sold nearer the time of our move. And once I've been through it all I'll start over and whittle it down some more no doubt :cute: Had planned to ship pretty much everything initially, but hubby and I both have revised this and now only plan to ship personal effects, a few items of furniture and the rest we'll buy over there once we have our own place (have plenty of family to borrow off if need be till then). I'm not overly attached to any furniture other than our bed, a gorgeous chair I waited 8 years for and my blanket box, all of which we'll be shipping  I can really see the finish line now and it feels good. So many reasons to be in Aus and hubby has been gone a fair while now and the pull home for him is big. I'm happy to be going, I know how it goes in the old missing people department but I managed 8 or 9 years overseas on my own before, we don't live close to family or close friends here in the UK and am well used to just getting on with living, Skyping as and when and so on. My parents are looking forward their first visit to Aus too which helps And wow, by the autumn we'll be on our way to Australia! :jiggy:
Alaska
Good luck with everything! You probably don't realise this but you had a little bit to do with my decision to move over here. I posted a thread about freaking out about not knowing if it was the right decision and you gave me some excellent advice that gave me the shove I needed! Hope you get everything sorted. Where are you headed? x

Tulip
Such a lovely post, as you know we're in the same boat as you, just about to lodge and I feel the same! Finally I can start feeling excited after a year of incredible stress about the application, we've decided we'll get a tourist visa in May or June to finish the leg of waiting so that will make it more manageable for me. Pretty cool that we'll both be waiting at the same time though, we can keep each other company.

Pretty cool that we'll both be waiting at the same time though, we can keep each other company. If need be I'll go over on a tourist visa but all being well our timing will work out so as the visa comes through before we want to go. Tourist visa is our fall back if its not through in time (we can go anytime after Sept and the latest we would like to be there is Christmas or Jan so we have a bit of breathing room). For us its a case of as soon as the visa is granted, we''ll be booking to fly within a few weeks, hopefully to tie in with half term or a term ending in the UK. So if it comes though in Oct we all being well can be leaving in Oct half term at the end of the month. Hubby most likely will remain in the UK for a month or two tying up loose ends and winding his job up. He's not going to hand his notice in till my visa is actually approved, so will work his notice. We don't mind this as we'll be staying with family for a while anyways, so pressure is off.
Tulip
I wish I had that freedom, hubby wants to get back to Uni by July and my bitch's rabies vac runs out in October so ideally we want to be out latest June time. I'm hoping our CO will be sympathetic! We'll also be staying with hubby's family so no worries there, thank goodness. It's exciting times!

Where are you headed? x Thank you And nope, not a clue. But nice to know you found a bit of encouragement in my words  I'm sure you'd have gotten there in the end anyways, just it is easy to get overwhelmed by it all and to keep focus. I've moved so many times now its just another day, albeit with a bit more effort involved and expended :cute: Its defo gotten more stressful since having a child though. Your priorities change and moving isn't just about you anymore. I hope it works out for you in the long term now you've made the move How long have you been over there now? We are heading to Adelaide, at least for a while. Hubby has most of his family there and tbh moving to any of the other major cities other than Melbourne seemed a bit of a no brainer. I liked the sound of Melbourne but ultimately it wasn't ever really a viable option as a place to start. We want our son to know his family and for us all to spend some time there so its our starting point. As to if we move on once we've spent a couple of years there, who knows. We are open minded about the possibilities. Hope to see plenty of Aus and have lots of people dotted around we need to catch up with. Hope to be taking trips Brisbane way, Sydney and also down to Melbourne visiting family and friends.

Good luck Thank you Well, we just wanted to be sure we gave ourselves time to do the things we wanted. We don't plan to be back living here for a while so having the opportunity for hubby to do triathlons, bike (cycling) racing and some trips and stuff seemed to make sense. We are very happy here in the UK so it wasn't like we wanted to be gone now or anything. Truth be told, if we could have gone 3 months after we actually said yes, we wanted to go, I'd have been more than happy. I am a bit of a doer in that respect. I just like to get on. But as we knew this was a slow burn we just sort of put it out of our minds till we actually got closer. The past couple of years have flown past and once we finally told our families this past spring/summer of our plans, it felt a bit more concrete. I'm the same, but unfortunately I have another 3yrs to wait... Yeah, its gotten more noticeable this past year, the pull for Aus. He wants to be out cycling the hills, camping out in the Flinders range and goodness knows what else. Also he is looking forward to seeing some of his friends too. Its been 7 years or 8 years since he has seen some of them. He misses the big sky also.
