I work for the NHS and I am planning to go to Oz on a 457 visa and in case i don't like it i would like to have the security of returning to my current trust in the UK. I am thinking about asking for a career break of 18 months or maybe 2 years, i figure by then I'll know if want to stay in oz and apply for PR or return to UK.

Has anyone applied for a career break before and what sort of reasons do they give for refusing you one?

I know I'm eligible to apply for one just wondering how likely i am to get it and anything i can do to increase me chances. What sort of things are taken into consideration?

Thank you :)

Hi Lorna

I know several people who have had career breaks. One for a year, one for 2 years and one for 4 months.

I am about to ask for one formally. My boss was a little reluctant but I have printed off a copy of the policy. I haven't asked formally yet but I think she will let me. Her main concern was covering the service as I do a skilled job and there aren't a lot of bank staff about that can adequately cover it. Hopefully though, she will be able to offer it as a one year secondment for someone.

I had to leave the NHS last year after 15 years service to make the move to Oz. As the career break policy now has a clause which says you're not eligible if you are going to undertake paid work. Which, lets face it, most of us will have to find employment over here. So I would keep quiet about employment while you are on a career break (perhaps volunteering instead?!) unless of course you are going to need a reference in which case you're in a hard place! My boss was also giving the speel about my specialist role and having to replace me. But as there is no money to replace staff who leave (that's how they 'save money') she ended up mentoring two members of staff on-the-job as a way of doing so. To be honest, I never intended to go back to the UK unless it turned out to be completely different to our expectations. But it would have felt very reassuring to know the option was there. However our big move has gone even better than we could have hoped, and I'd say go for it with or without a career break! Good luck x.

thanks fragglefeet, i read the policy and it said no paid work unless its in another country or for charity so think i should be ok but yeah if i don't get a career break i will be going anyway, would just feel safer! thats great your move has gone so well, i love stories like that :) and i hope mine will too, with or without the NHS :) x

Good for you LornaG! That's the best attitude to have x. I read the policy myself (I spoke to HR before I approached my boss as I didn't expect her to say yay without putting up a bit of resistance!) and my trust's policy didn't mention about paid work being allowed in another country. So that's great news for you, keep us posted how you get on.

Hi

I applied for 12 month career break from the NHS. I am currently a Band 6 in Gastroenterology. I am going to a clinical tutor position on the Sunshine Coast. My trust granted my break, I was upfront about working and as long as my work in Oz will broaden my knowledge and experiences then it was ok.

I took a career break from the NHS whilst I undertook a working holiday in australia as a radiographer. It's down to your managers discretion as to whether they let you have one and you can also work as long as your not being paid by the NHS and your in another country. Wishing you all the best of luck
