Guest The Pom Queen
Someone told me today if Kate has a baby girl she will be the next Queen of England instead of Charles becoming King, is this right?
Rupert
I don't think so, but it is being seriously contemplated and may happen. But the approprate law has not changed yet as far as I know.
Notts
No. The baby will be ahead of Harry and any younger siblings, regardless of whether it is a boy or a girl.
Alaska
No. She will be Queen rather than a male baby born later becoming King instead. I believe it will be Charles, Wills, baby.

Skani
No. Charles is next in line to the throne, then William. Until now, William's sons would have taken precedence over any daughters - but only after he died. The change will be that William's firstborn will take precedence over his other children, even if a girl (same as Swedish royal family).

Guest GeorgeD
Has it been ratified in law yet? There's certainly a desire to do it, quite rightly, but I don't think the legislation to make it happen has actually been put in place yet. The pregnancy means they will need to get a move on...15 Commonwealth realms had to ratify it (especially NZ, as only them and the Uk have domestic laws on Royal Succession apparently), and they had agreed it in principle back in 2011...but obviously there is a deadline now, so they are moving much quicker. The last I saw of it, the Government had published a Bill but were awaiting Parliamentary Time to approve it: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-20713315 Strictly speaking...MPs could vote against it (but they won't) so it isn't actually law yet. Incidentally, the same law will mean that you are no longer barred from the monarchy for marrying a Catholic, so Prince Michael will rejoin the Royal Succession line, albeit a bit far down these days. And, not Kate's baby isn't first, it's Charles, William, Baby, Prince Harry, Prince Andrew, etc...

Freckleface
yup - it was ratified a couple of days after the announcement of the baby being due NWM I thought they were still waiting for some Commonwealth countries including Aust (?) to agree and that it wouldn't be absolutely final for several months. You're correct - it was agreed by the commonwealth countries a couple of days later but is yet to be ratified http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-20600543 NWM
egrek
Which means it's possible, if they don't all agree, to have a king & queen, and a queen of England at the same time! (Eg a Queen of England - if the firstborn is a girl) (But the Aussies/others don't recognise the girl and see her younger brother as the King - if he's married he has his own Queen!) - I'm up for the split, would make things a lot more interesting
