GTP - Starting from scratch?

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I completed a GTP, which I know is not accepted in Australia. I have been teaching English for 6 years, am the Head of Media Studies and have a TLR point for whole school literacy.

If I convert my GTP to an Aussie PGCE would I have to start from scratch and apply for NQT jobs? Bit confused at the moment :frown:

Am grateful for any advice,

Cheers x

Hi Palmerits - The Australian equivalent to a PGCE is a Graduate Diploma of Education, and to qualify to study this, you will need to have a minimum of a 3 year Bachelor Degree. I understand that you can study this externally through some Australian Universities if you are still in UK. you cannot convert GTP to a Grad Dip.

There is no such thing as NQT in Australia.

Not sure about the rest of the country, but in WA you are classed as a new Graduate for the first 2 years after your qualification as a teacher and can access Graduate modules through the Institute of Professional Learning, a section of the Department of Education of WA.

Hope this helps.

You can study the Grad Dip from the UK? Could you share these Uni's, I have never seen this and would be interested!

Many thanks

Google "Grad Dip Ed in Australia Externally" and you will get a list of all the unis that do this. Some only offer this to Australian Citizens, but I have it on good authority that Griffiths University will consider you if you life overseas and have the necessary qualifications to register.

Griffiths doesn't offer the qualification required for ITT distance learning.

The Graduate Diploma of Education - Secondary program will be offered via in-person, on-campus mode. The program will be offered on a full-time or part-time basis and the entry point is semester one only. Students who accept an offer on the Mt Gravatt campus will be required to attend classes at that campus.

Murdoch University offers an external Graduate Diploma in Education ( both primary and secondary are offered) .The first two week prac does have to be undertaken in Perth. However, after that the student is able to study fully externally anywhere in the world.

Hi

I have done post grad study with Murdoch Uni in Perth both externally and internally. I currently teach in WA and we have a lot of Murdoch prac students come into our schools.

This course is available externally and I currently know people in London and Russia doing it :) I had a friend based in Japan who came over for the prac and then studied in Japan for the remainder of the course

You do have to attend a two week school experience ( prac) in Perth. After that all school experiences can be arranged in your home country. You will also have to do a week on campus for the intensive art/phys ed component. However, MUSE the school placement office facilitate it so that you can do this as a three week block.

You may get credit depending on what you have studied before. The academic chair would be able to advise you with this.

I can point you in the direction of the right person to talk to at Murdoch if you like. They are extremely helpful

Hi Sammy, I certainly would be interested in exploring this option further. Especially if it is an initial teacher training course. I am currently completing an MEd so I may be able to use something from it you never know! If you could PM a contact I would appreciate it, I have friends and family in Perth so studying from there would be ideal.
