paul1977
Agree with you on the cost of things, just got back to perth from a months holiday in London, walked around the local shopping center and just laughed at the shops, done my weeks food shopping , got rolled 300 bucks for the pleasure... Coles and woolworths are 20 years behind uk supermarkets with prices 20 years ahead of the uk ones at present. Brought my self a bottle of evian water everyday back home, prices at 82 pence for 2 litres. Went to pick one up at woolworths and nearly fell over when it was priced at 4 bucks.. Just a small example .

Bob1
why would you say that because I'm a lecturer at University teaching teachers how to teach so I am familiar with theory, curriculum, research and practice. So far haven't found any academic research to show that we are two years behind the UK, mate.

Actually, compulsory education is older in Oz than in the UK.
Freckleface
What's the best way to measure how 'good' an education system is? Or how could we compare the UK system versus the Aussie one? We could start by looking at who can use their, there and they're correctly for starters.

Derry
I have lived in a number of countries and can confirm the standard of education at primary level is minimum 2 years behind the Uk and Ireland. The curriculum here is too heavily weighted in favour of projects and nice to know things but the standard of maths, spelling or fundamentals is much lower. Teaching is pitched at a mediocre student and bright students are left unchallenged and switch off. The education system here loves to test bright students but doesn't know what to do after that? I have taught my five year old phonics as there was no system in place outside of sight words. Teaching in the Uk and Ireland is layered, a subject is taught, reinforced and tested and ciritcal subjects are given the time and weighting in the curriculum. Ask any Australian coming back from the Uk and Singapore on the education system and they have the same findings. We are returning to the Uk as the education isn't meeting any of our children's needs. The system of ticking boxes 95% of the time to answer maths questions means a child loses all their problem solving skills and mental agility. We have been here 18 months and been at two schools the current one being one of the top performing ones in Sydney and my eldest has been taught no spelling. Apparently it isn't important here? Parents are tutoring to such a level to fill in the knowledge gaps created by the education system, it is a necessity here not a luxury. If you were to strip out all the work done by tutors here and then test the students knowledge at Naplan the figures would be considerably lower and show the true extent of the problem. I would suggest a week in a good Uk school and it becomes very apparent that the whole style of teaching is minimum 15 years behind other nations. Look at the World Education survey just published for primary schools and Australia is very far behind the other Westernised countries.
