A 62 year old Australian nomad living in Asia has has his Disability Pension restored on appeal to the Administration Appeals Tribunal.

He was judged by CentreLink to no longer qualify for not meeting resident requirements.

The man had been on a pension since April 1984 after being told he suffered schizophenia. For the past ten years he has passed half the year in countries as varies as Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, Malaysia, China and Philippines.

He lived in NT in campsites and on Aboriginal land on his returns to Australia. He has in recent times claimed he can no longer afford Australia and hence could not meet residential requirements.

This new finding could now mean Aussie pensioners can now move to Asia and avoid requirements with regards to time abroad.

An attractine propostion to a whole range of folk. Saves Australia the cost of age care and medical expenses at the same time.

I suppose it's similar to all the benefits that leave the UK to those living in spain I try not to think about it as it just winds me up!

Although it would be cheaper in the case of Australia at least if the mentally ill,old and infirm were to relocate to the South East Asian region surely?

I have come across a few in Thailand and Cambodia around the same age as the gent mentioned waiting for 65 then back to OZ to claim aged pension then return to their Asian retreat. Not bad surely.

I would even suggest their lives may well be enhanced by the experience. Living in retirement alone in Australia is possibly not a very rewarding.

In Asia they could afford three meals a day, some beer in the evening and purchase female company at times.......
