SaffanZimbo
We are still at the very early stages of planning our move but I am trying to get an overall budget for shipping costs. We are looking to take a household of furniture (2 bedroom) but without dining furniture or white goods. We are also taking 4 x bicycles and 2 x motorbikes and a VW Passat Estate. We are not sure whether to go for a 20" container (£5000 estimated cost) with the car inside or if we should ship the car RORO first to arrive first as OH will be going ahead of us to find a job etc. My thoughts are that it would be cheaper to have the car in the container and crate around it and then fill with our household goods. Has anyone got any experience of doing it either way and wouldn't mind sharing their experience re timings and cost please?
Incata
Get in touch with Iron Lady Imports (top thread). They are helping us import our Landrover into Australia and have been excellent. I don't know whether or not you can actually put your car in a container and then put your goods around it, as a car is not considered to be a personal effect. We have spoken to a number of companies in the UK as well as Iron Lady Imports and Iron Lady are extremely competitive on price and (more importantly) have excellent reviews from people on the boards. We learned with our most recent shipping experience that good reviews on the forum are really, really important. What has consistently been mentioned (although I have no experience/knowledge of it, not having shipped anything before) is that it is best to send your car via container rather than roll on roll off. The reason we have been given is that if anything in the car is not strapped down, it will be stolen if it stops in any port in the Middle East (my apologies to anyone who lives there but it has come up time and time again). If the car goes in a container, what they will do (apparently) is put it in, build a wall in the middle and stick another car in behind it, thus making both secure and halving the cost. Lozzchops
We put our car in a container with our personal effects. You have to apply for an import permit before it can be shipped and you must have owned and be able to prove proof of ownership 12 months prior to shipping. We have had some slight damage to front wing on arrival and so will have to claim on insurance policy which unfortunately has €350 excess so that's annoying. In terms of customs Pickfords were our agents in Perth and they sorted everything for us,household effects were cleared separetly to the car.You do need to bear in mind the time it takes and we were somewhat stiched up by our removal company having paid for a sole use container ,everything got sent groupage and so took much longer. On arrival in Perth once duties have been paid,we had the car road tested and registered, the whole process took 5 months probably could have done it in 3/4 months had our container arrived and if i had been more efficient with the paperwork. Lozzchops
Forgot to say ,don't underestimate the cost of setting up home from scratch here, bring as much as you possibly can as in the big picture everything adds up,along with our car we only brought personal effects, kids toys, bikes etc.It was handy in that we went and bought new beds ,bought a lot off gum tree so was set up quckly on arrival, but kitting out the kitchen with fridge, dining table, sofa , buying bedlinen and quilts, lamps etc added up,its also important to have your own things around to help you settle down quickly. As and when the time comes we'll be putting ours in a container to go, ideally with our stuff. In fairness, it's my toy so doesn't need to be there ahead of time / same time as us arriving. In fact, with all the other costs, I expect it will sit in the garage for a few months after we get there. What kind of car are you taking?
