harri10
It's only 5weeks until we get to the Sunshine Coast and I couldn't be more excited. This 3week trip will decide wether we pack up our lives here in the uk and move to oz. We are staying at peregian beach near noosa and it looks fantastic. We have the obvious trips planned like Australia zoo, lone pine koala sanctuary, underwater world etc but want to know if there are any other excursions that we should do? I also want to know if there are any toddler groups on that my 2 year old would enjoy. this is our one chance to make our decision so I need to treat this trip as tho we lived there and do the things we would do in normal day to day life. I am so excited now, thinking of starting to pack our cases!!!!
SkippyChick11
Hi Harri, Good luck with your upcoming trip to Aus! We've just gotten back from a 4wk hol - most of the time we were in the Sunny Coast area as my family lives in the hinterland. A couple of my favourites are: - Eumundi Markets - on Wed and Sat each week - Lake Cootharaba (Boreen Point) - kayak hire etc. Great swimming for your little'un too Have fun! harri10
Yes I've looked in to the markets, they look fab. There are some others in the surrounding areas too which I'm sure I will drag my husband round. Do you know if there are groups like little nippers that run on week long courses for my 9 year old to join. I really want to get the feel for living there and would be lovely to meet a few people out there too and for my children to make a friend or two would be fab as if we do decide to move out there then it will be to the Sunshine Coast area. im so excited, the 24 hour long flight with a 2year old isn't even phasing me!!!!!!! Haha.
Flathead
Do you already have jobs sorted?
harri10
No not yet. We are really using this trip to make sure it's what we want to do. My husband is an electrician but can also do air con and solar panels so I think he has a good chance of getting a job if its what we decide. I am a childminder at the mo but would ideally like a part time job in a shop or cafe to get me by when the children are at school. We are in no great rush to get there as we are mid way thought extending our home in the uk so would need to complete that so it's ready to rent out. We would ideally look at the move being sometime in 2015 the earlier the better. it's some thing we've both dreamed of doing and can't see that this trip will change our plans, just make us want it more! Flathead
OK.....just bear in mind that the Sunshine coast is not a good area to find work. no use wanting to move somewhere only to find you can not get work. You really ought to check out employment prospects as well.....jobs like working in a shop or cafe are never easy to find and there are plenty of people looking. Good luck
Xenon4017
Good idea to check out the place first. Get your husband to contact a few potential employers so that he can have a chinwag when he gets there. I'm not saying it'll lead to a job, but their advice will be very valuable. Most tradies like to give you the low down on how things are going. The great paradox with the Sunshine coast is that it's a fantastic place to live, both on the coast and in the hills behind, but financing it can be a challenge. But, if nothing else, it's a great place to spend a 3 week holiday.

harri10
Hi Allison, i have looked at that area too and it looks lovely. how have you found getting jobs? Did you do anything about this when you were over on your hols? Do you know much about the schools? We have a 9 year old and a 2 year old. this trip for us will probably be the only chance we have of going over as a family so the decision really does lie in this trip. i am so excited but also a little nervous.....i just hope it lives up to my dreams!!! any info would be fantastic. thanks, harriet x
allisonc771
Hi harriet I am a nurse and I managed to get a clinical nurse position in Nambour, I applied from the Uk and had a telephone interview. My husband is going to get the children settled and then look for work when we are there. I have 3 children 16,13 and 3 so have looked around at schools. My best friend lives in mooloolaba and is married to an Australian so she has been a great help. I also have a friend who emigrated to the Gold Coast on Boxing day and so far so good for her. I too am very nervous but from being in touch with a lot of people it seems to be something we all go through!! I am sure it will live up to your dreams, it certainly lived up to mine it is a beautiful area. Keep in touch and let me know how you go on Allison x
Wellers and Whitehead
I echo the point made about seeing if jobs in your fields are available. Maybe apply for a few? See if you hear back etc, would your husband need to do more training to reach 'Australian standards'? Some tradies do. :-)
harri10
Thank you for your reply. im a childminder at the moment and my husband is an electrician so hopefully he wouldn't find it too hard to find work? i wish we knew people who have moved out there to give us advice, your very lucky! good luck with your move over and we will be there in 5weeks sussing out all the areas we are interested in. We are staying in peregian beach which looks amazing, can't wait to go to noosa and surrounding areas to see what's best for us. Maybe in a year or so we will be in your position and getting ready for our big move :-)
Flathead
Thank you for your reply. im a childminder at the moment and my husband is an electrician so hopefully he wouldn't find it too hard to find work? Don't bank on it. You need to give yourself options.....and don't kid yourselves that you could commute to Brisbane on a regular basis. lots of people would love to live on the SC....the reason they don't is the lack of work. He's an electrician and has been qualified for 15 years but he would still need to do a lot of courses which luckily they run in London so he could complete all that before we get there which would be a definite advantage to finding work. weve also sent a few emails to local electrical companies but so far had no replies. I think when we get an agent to sort our visas we will seriously look into job vacancies etc....

You should also take the opportunity to look at North Brisbane....somewhere around Caboolture for example... That would give you the chance to commute to greater Brisbane and also not a long drive to the SC or to Bribie Island
harri10
This is exactly the reason we are coming over. I have lots of ideas in my head of how easy we will find work and how easy we will settle in etc but reality is very different. Like you said if there is no work then we won't be living there. We have to be where the work is. My husband commutes now but ideally doesn't want to carry on doing that so the closer to the work the better. there are so many areas we are going to look at, we have a very broad area to research and visit during our trip. We are going to be very busy!!! I must remember to save some days purely for holiday!!!!!

One thing you must remember....the traffic at quiet times is very different to peak travel times....don't be kidded by quiet roads.....the traffic into Brisbane in the mornings can be horrendous and you can be held up for hours by a single accident. This happens quite often and is also one of the reasons may people will not commute.
roger2shirts
In Buderim the best State Schools are Chancellor College and Buderim Mountain. Private Schools ou have Immanuel, Sunshine Coast Grammer, Scienna Catholic. For kindy the early learning centre at Immanuel College is FANTASTIC. Buderim is a lovely place to live and make sure your 9 year old gets signed up for Nippers at Mooloolaba surf club.
