Francisco
Hello Everyone! I am moving to Syd to study an MBA on march 2013 (moving to Manly). I like surfing back at my home town, where you can surf freely at all times of day without any shark danger (no shark attacks registered throughout time). However, I have been watching news of several shark attacks at OZ and I am really freaked out about it! I am even considering not surfing, which would be the worst for me because I am really looking forward to it!! I just hate those sea dinasours (but mean them no harm)!! Any tips or comments???? Thanks a lot!
Guest51810
Im scared of them too but realistically your chance of being munched is quite slim. Just follow the usual tips - dont go in the sea certain times - think its dusk and dawn? Hopefully theres some surfers on here who can help more! Chillers
Surf on beaches that have life guards.. Most do. They are really hot on keeping an eye out for sharks.
wakeboard1980
Where are all these shark attacks you are reading about. I think you hear more of them from areas of WA which is on the other side of the country. Yes there has been one in the last week or so off the NSW coast but if you are worried about being eaten by a shark whilst surfing then you better not drive a car either. Chillers tip is a good one. Surf at the patrolled beaches, at least there are extra sets of eyes keeping a look out. You will be fine, take your board and get out there. Francisco
hahaha, thanks a lot guys, I am from Peru (great waves in here too if you guys ever wanna visit), laughed really hard with scottishstacey expression "being munched" lol.... Yeah I know, odds are against being bitten, and can understand that one cannot live afraid through life, its just that these sharkdudes really freak me out, perhaps because I have never dealt with that risk... The lifeguard option is very good too. Have you guys heard something about bright colours attrackting them or is that just "shark tales"? Again, thanks to everyone! Guest51810
plus the life guards might be hot - joke! Even if your not brave enough to go surfing dont let it put you off going in the water a bit
wakeboard1980
Haven't herad about the bright colours, heard about surfers and body boarders looking like turtles when they are laying on their boards. Maybe when you get to sydney you should go to the aquarium and learn a bit about the sharks, that may help you 'understand' then a bit more. hahaha, thanks a lot guys, I am from Peru (great waves in here too if you guys ever wanna visit), laughed really hard with scottishstacey expression "being munched" lol.... Francisco
Yeah, not really into dude lifeguards (in my country most lifeguards are male), but if there is a nice girl life guard Ill be trying to catch her eye definitely!! - joke too! In the end I will go out there, can not afford not swimming or surfing in OZ!!!! I was looking for tips and perhaps a couple more cowards like myself so i didnt fear alone! Asides from Sharks, how is live in Sydney? I am moving to Manly, a couple of friends are receiving me at their house but must look for a flatshare at Manly... How is the vibe there, are people as cool as you hear? I know this 2 friends and nobody else in all Australia, quite nervous for that too.... Chillers
Manly is a very sociable area, lots to do there. Better than Bondi in my opinion. Also they do have life guards there and they are very good, as for shark attacks i've not heard of one in Sydney personally. They are more likely up the northern territory etc in the warmer waters. The only thing i think you'll have to fear are the blue bottles.

Joebloggs
There was a shark warning on New Years Day when I was at Bondi, the alarm went off and they cleared the water.
Freckleface
I've been surfing in Aust my entire life and haven't been eaten yet. If you are worried about it just do as others have said and stick to the patrolled beaches. The one thing I don't do is surf at night. We were always told we were more likely to get attacked then (although I'm not sure if there is any scientific evidence to back it up). I've never heard that colour attracts sharks - in fact I avoid wearing dull colours so they don't think I am a seal.
Guest Guest26012
We have had some shark attacks in wa but it wouldn't stop me getting in the water. We do mainly use patrolled beaches though!

Mongrel
A bloke I worked with an Aussie swims at trigg Wa and Cottesloe every day after work , chances of him being nibbled are shorter than most , , apparently they have done a study and the dusk dawn time thing is a fallacy . It's like owt the grey suits have been there all the time , it's lately with air patrols etc that they are seen . I see it like this everyone sleeps in their bed but put a camera with microscopic view on . The peeps would see the creepy crawlers and freak out , we'll my mrs would
