Hi

i have been offered a 457 sponsorship as a panel beater in Brisbane . We're a family of 4 with 2 young children aged 2 and 6 months . If we was going to rent somewhere for about 300 - 400 a week , do you think we would get by ?? It works out something like 1200 a week and there is a bonus scheme on top of that .

Thanks nick

It doesn't sound great to me. We are a family of 4 with kids aged 3 and 1 and we reckon we'll need $70,000 minimum to get by and around $85k to have a reasonably comfortable lifestyle. I'm sure someone who already lives over there will be along soon with more accurate info to answer your question, though.

$60k isn't going to give you 1200 a week after tax. In fact 52 x $1200 = $62400 so certainly your maths is wrong here as you will only be getting tax deducted not credited! I believe you would come home with about $900 per week. I don't live in Brisbane and I know it is cheaper up there, but $300 a week rent sounds exceptionally low.

I always hesitate to comment on other people's salaries, most of us cut our cloth accordingly. So the best judge of this is you, as a guideline could you manage on GBP 25k in UK (with no child benefit or tax credits). If yes then you might manage on this.

Short answer - It will be verrrrry difficult.

Always consider the moving over and establishing life here expenses as well. With that salary there is no room for manoeuvre. One wouldn't want to struggle in the other side of the world with no family or friend support as opposed to struggling in your home country if at all. There are psychological issues as well and may well result in a ping pong situation IMO.

That does seem a bit low for a family of 4.

how does the bonus scheme work?

No it won't be enough, not sure of your visa but if you are not a perm resident you will not be entitled to the child benefits either which will make life even harder. I've just left Brisbane, it's pretty expensive for everything, rent being a major income eater, you may see places for rent for $300-400 a week but don't be fooled, they may be in not so good areas or don't have aircon, also finding a rental can be difficult too as you have no Oz references......food isn't far behind....you won't get much change from $200 a week for a family of 4 and that doesn't include nappies, baby milk or alcohol, electric is expensive too, I used to budget around $150 a month for electric.

I also echo what others have said, set up costs are very expensive, secondhand cars are expensive too and you also have to pay stamp duty on that too as well as having driving licence and rego costs too. Do the sums and don't be blinded by the sunshine.

Nope, it won't be a comfortable experience. Don't be swayed by the "overtime" and "bonuses" thing either - what often happens is that such perks never materialise and you have only the certainty of a very low income (about 900 cash in hand per week with around half of that going in rent before you start). You will also see on this board and others the difficulty that dependents on a temporary visa have of getting work so even having a second income into the family isn't a given either.

It would be pretty tough. Also the kind of places you could rent in for $300 or so a week might not be the kind of places you would like to raise your family. Although at least schools are less of an issue for you at the moment.

I don't agree with the $600 a week for rent though. We live in a lovely area (3 bed plus study, 2 bath and big garden) for $450 and you shouldn't struggle to find something good for that kind of price as long as you are happy in the suburbs.
