Which Visa????

Hi Guys, im new to this site and have a few questions about visas. I have recently had a job offer from Obrien windscreens in Brisbane and would like to know which visa would be best suited to me? My plan is to live and work out there for six months before i bring out the rest of my family, so i can get everything set up for them i.e house, schools etc. Which visa should i be applying for? What are my chances of getting one? How much does it cost? How easy would it be to get my family out there once i have settled? Where do i start?

Any info on yhis matter would be greatly appreciated.

I would have thought that your employer would be organising your visa? Most employers go for the 457 temporary employer sponsored visa.

There are criteria to be met, the occupation needs to be on the CSOL (below), there are minimum salary requirements and the employer has to meet certain criteria too e.g. around training budget for Australian staff.

They told me they werent in a position to offer me sponsorship but would happily give me a job if i sorted out my own visa. Is this them just fobbing me off or what??

What do you think?

No, it is perfectly normal for companies not to offer sponsorship. However it will take you a while to organise your own visa, if you qualify for one. Is this job offer open ended?

Those of us that organise our own visas used the skilled migration route. You should go to www.immi.gov.au and read about the 189 and 190 visas. There will be quite a lot for you to do, IELTS (English test), skills assessment, expression of interest, visa application, medicals and police checks. From beginning to end you would be very lucky to get all this done within six months, more likely it will take longer.

The first thing you would need to do is nominate an occupation from the skills list (SOL or CSOL) and you should also take a points test to see if you can pass it. You will find both on the website I provided the link for using the search function.

O'Brien are correct, they cannot offer you sponsorship. Autoglazier is not an sponsorable occupation, nor can you apply independently for state or independent visas:

DescriptionRepairs and replaces windscreens and side and rear glass in motor vehicles.Skill Level4Alternative Titles

  • Windscreen Fitter

Specialisations

  • Vehicle Window Tinter

Occupation ListsThis occupation is not on the following skills lists:

Unless you have another skill that is in demand, there most likely is not a visa you can apply for.

Maybe your right??? I have a few friends that have had no problems getting visas in the same occupation, so there must be a loop hole somewhere. Will contact them and find out.

If the occupation is not on the lists (and I have not looked as you have not mentioned what your occupation is) then there is no way around it. Your friends may have got in on a partner's skills, or maybe the occupation was once on the lists. The lists are updated regularly.

Thanks for all the info guys, its really helped. I made contact with Australian migration and they told me that i may be able to apply for RSMS sub class 187 as my occupation is not on the skills list. I have read that i just need to be nominated by my employer and then i can apply for this visa with a cost of 3060 AUD. I also have to work in an area that is classed as regional and live there for atleast 2 years. Does anyone have any experience or know more about this visa?

Oh dear .. I am afraid that this is yet another example of bad advice from the Australian immigration helplines. It used to be the case that the occupation did not need to be on the list for the RSMS visa, however this changed on 1st July 2012 and now the CSOL applies to all employer sponsored visas. You cannot get a RSMS visa unless your occupation is on the SOL or CSOL.

The Australian immigration services are not there to advice people on visa strategy, they are there to implement rules, but occasionally they try to be helpful and they really should stop it because giving out false information is not helpful.

Rupert.

Is a skills assessment mandatory for a 187?

Cheers

Thanks again for the info, who would be the best people to advise me of the best route for me into Australia, nothing seems black and white in the visa game. I just want to know how i can live and work there or is it not possible? Surely it cant be that difficult to get into Australia. Is Australian immigration alot tougher than Uk immigration because by the look of some of the immigrants in the UK they cant be that fussy on who they let in.

If my wifes occupation is on both these lists and i have a job offer for an occupation that is no longer on either of these lists which visa would be best for me to apply for?

If you are in an occupation that is not on the lists then having a job offer won't help. If your wife is in an occupation on the lists, then she could be the main applicant.

To your post above, actually I think the visa process is black and white, you just asked the wrong person for advice re the RSMS. And yes it can be hard to get into Australia, why wouldn't it be? Not everyone is eligible for a visa. And in fact immigration in UK is pretty tough for non-EU citizens, I know people that have moved to Australia because they could not get into UK.

What does your wife do?

Yes it is on the CSOL but i cant find it on any state sponsorship lists.

Then unfortunately it appears that there are no options for you and she would need to find an employer to sponsor to get a visa.

The only other thing, somebody earlier in the thread mentioned glazier ... it really seemed to me like this was buildings glazier and definitely not auto but you might as well run this one to ground.
