Dietitians

I would check out jobs unless you are going to work privately. My friend told me the other day that another friend of hers daughter cannot get a job as a Dietician, there are none around. She was trained here in Aus and she is very disappointed.

Just be careful and check it out. What's on the list and what is reality is often two different things.

Hi dietitians just thought I'd let you know I have got a job yippee so there is hope. I got my DAA registration in jan so it's taken me two months. I would say if you have experience especially in a specialised area you have a good chance. There is huge amount of new grads here with not enough new grad jobs (same a UK I guess) so I think of you are flexible with locations and you have experience you have a good chance! Just beware it can take time so you have to be patient. Best of luck!

Hi irish girl, the exam isn't easy but def if you do some study you should be fine. They were split into clinical, community/health promotion and food service. I thought the clinical ones were fine...just read up on all the guidelines on the DAA website. It was food service and public health that was hard. There is a list of mentors you can contact on the website. I used them to find out good textbooks for food service and public health. To be honest I didn't bother buying them in the end! The mentors are handy but to be honest they don't know much about the exam itself they can just just help with specific dietetics Qs.

Nutrition Australia is a good website...look up nutrition guidelines eg fruit and veg is 7 servings here, look up guidelines for salt, calcium all that kinda thing.also guidelines in renal disease. Also food safely e.g what food is high risk for listeria. I will get a list of website I used together and post them here or if you want me to email you directly send me ur email.

Ps iv only ever worked in paeds so the thought of revising for adults was daunting too but actually it's good if you are planning to move here anyways to do some revision and broaden job opportunities.

Hi Osheac,

I know this thread is a bit old now but I am also doing the exam in September in Perth. I was just wondering if it would be possible to get that lists of websites from you also if you still have it? Finding the whole thing a bit daunting and the information on the DAA website is a bit vague.

id really appreciate any help you can give.

thanks.

Hi!

there are new Australian nutrition guidelines that might be something that might come up check out: http://www.nhmrc.gov.au/guidelines/publications/n29-n30-n31-n32-n33-n34

have a look at project planning, evaluation etc...they love that kinda stuff!, someone sent me this link

http://medicine.tcd.ie/nutrition-dietetics/jobnut/ it might look kinda confusing but just pick out a few bits.

Also revise food safely and what foods are linked with what bacteria e.g. Eggs at risk of salmonella.

I found the daa very vague too! I think if you can do some broad revision at least the questions are multiple choice so even if you don't know some things in a lot if detail u will hopefully pick out the correct answer.

The guidelines on the daa are important. They had a whole q on renal which was in those guidelines.

i used google to look up nutrition health issues linked to indigenous population. You will find info on increased risk diabetes etc.

if you want to pm me your email address I will send you on any other links I think of.

hope that helps

Hi Cat,

My name is Lily and I am an American dietitian looking to relocate to Sydney. I am in the process of studying for the MCQ exam and would really appreciate it if you can pass along any study guides/resources. The DAA website is very vague and not helpful.

Your process with relocating and finding a job is very inspiring! I have been doing alot of job hunting in Oz but do not have much luck..

Thanks so much!!

Lily

Hi guys,

Apologies I know this thread is a bit old now,

I've just recently moved to Oz from Ireland and am looking to do the DAA exams to work over as a dietitian over here (I'm UK qualified). If I am honest the prospect of the DAA exams are so daunting! (I've been backpacking for the past 6months). Most of my experience has been on spinal injury unit and with care of the elderly so I may have a fair bit to brush up on!

I plan to sit the MCQ exam in September in Sydney.  Any chance any of you could also send me on any study material or resources you found useful would be very much appreciated! I'm freaking out as I'm off to do my 3months of farm work and may be cutting myself tight study-time wise!

Thanks a mil,

Caoimhe:)

PS hearing all your positive stories about passing the exams has given me hope!

@Caoimhe

I moved to Sydney in Feb and I'm sitting for the DAA exam in Sept. If you go back to the previous pages you will find useful links and clues about the test by ready peoples comments. I was also told by DAA that they will send me some contacts of people who took the exam in the last few years so I can have a clue about what to expect.

I think if you go to the DAA website and look at the competencies for Entry level dietitians you will have a better understanding of the things you might need to study and refresh your knowledge on. I personally purchased a handbook called clinic nutrition and dietetics 5th edition from ebay, I should receive it next week. I saw it with a colleague of mine who graduated recently from Sydney as a dietitian and she mentioned that they use it as a reference locally. I will personally start studying from my own university lecture slides and then try to get into local nutrition recommendations.

Let me know if you would like to meet and maybe study together, I usually go to State or Waverly library to study.

Best regards,

B

Hi Ms. Osheac,

I'm a Filipino Dietitian, just submitted my application for Eligibility assessment. I'm planning to sit the MCQ exam also after 6 weeks of assessment. I've read your discussions and advices regarding what to expect and this is a little old now. But if you can help me with the resources you used before it might be a big help.

Will do message my email privately.

Thank you very much!
