NZtoMelbourne
Hi, While my husband is a Pom we are already living in NZ where we are planning to move from to Melbourne mid 2013. He has been in media here for many years, and the last 2.5 he has spent working in marketing/sales (due to the small city we're living in). As sales isn't his passion he is thinking about retraining, possibly to work in IT (he used to be a buyer many years ago) or telecommunications. I guess I'm just feeling it out - does anyone know of any reputable training establishments? Or companies that will invest time/effort into someone that has the skills but not necessarily the qualifications? His other option is to do more marketing/media work, I think he may not be as keen on this as he doesn't want to be 'stuck' in a sales role where he would much rather be doing something creative. Your advice will be gladly received!

Guest
I retrained in IT at 30 so it can be done but regardless of age you have to accept you will be going back to a graduate trainee salary and position. Are you willing and able to do this? Ultimately previous experience will probably result in faster progression due to cross-transferable skills but it takes time. I would strongly advise against training courses that lead to an industry certification - you will pay many $1000s for them and without experience are unlikely to get a job. Company training schemes are the best option - they pay for the training, you get on the job experience at the same time and a salary. You do need to be a graduate usually but not necesarily in an IT or telecoms field - my degree is psychology. Competition is of course fierce so you need to have a competitive edge - this is where anything you can do in your current job or indeed hobbies is relevant. TAFE type courses taken alongside current work can help with that especially if you can use it to get some experience eg do a WordPress course and create a website for a organisation you are involved with such as a sports club. The best possible option is to engineer retraining in the company you are already working for, I have seen many people enter IT from other business areas, again part time courses can be used to develop skills which his current employer would value. It may be he could use his current skills to move into an IT sales role with an opportunity to move into technical pre-sales and ultimately a technical role.
