Guest Inge
Hi, My oh has been invited for interview regarding a position in Renmark. It appears to be a decent salary package, presumably as more difficult to recruit skilled professionals in the rural areas. We've tried to use the web to research, but other than knowing its on the river would really like to have anybody's opinion on living in Renmark or rural aus in general in this area. Are there activities to keep toddlers amused etc, parks, swimming pools, wildlife parks etc. Many thanks, Inge
noworriesmate
Renmark is a beautiful part of the world on the Murray river and very agricultural - it's the sort of place people holiday to but it is very much a country town. I love going there but as a city dweller I would struggle to live there. I think it would be an amazing place to bring up kids though, it has everything - beautiful parks, the river and I understand the schools are good too. Rupert
Would you be moving from the UK or from somewhere else in Australia? The reason I ask, is I sometimes think that people fresh from the UK cannot quite comprehend the remoteness of some places in Australia; because really other than Scottish highlands perhaps nowhere is that remote, even if it is rural UK. We have been here a couple of years now and have travelled to some of the more rural towns so have a vague idea of what they are like and if we did decide to move to one, we would have a better understanding now than if we had gone there straight off the plane. Looking at a map, this is 3 hours from Adelaide and 7 hours from Melbourne, so it could be a massive culture shock and you should not under estimate that. blossom
I really like renmark. I am not a city person at all though. Three hours from Adelaide would probably be about right. If you crave the city it is a good excuse for a weekend away.
Jacaranda
I've been to Renmark a few times (My Dad was a keen fisherman so we used to go up the river quite alot!)and yeah a nice town!I'm no city slicker but I can vouch for country towns. They usually have a really good community spirit, everyone knows eachother (To me thats a positive),good sporting facilities, nice shops (its no british high street so don't expect it to be)but it has everything you need.If and when I move back to Oz I am deffo heading for a country town.I like the pubs too!I like the fact people fall out of them at chucking out time (or beyond)and you don't get thrown out if you're p***** lol I like the rugged, rough and tumble side of country towns.Something that I really miss in the UK actually.I'd go for it OP,with a vengeance!lol
John2012
Hi inge I currently stay in Berri which is just along the road from Renmark. This area is called the riverlands and it is the nicest area in South Australia. As previous people have said,,,it is not the city and you would have to get used to the odd trading hours of shops etc but the people are nice, the weather is pefect and it has been sitting between 40c and 38c for a couple of weeks. It is hot but you do learn to adapt and enjoy. We only moved to Berri in the last 3 weeks. Renmark was the first choice but couldnt get anywhere decent to stay as quality rental housing can be limited but it is there. We moved from Glasgow to Whyalla (stayed for 8 months and that was a dump) then to Berri as my wife got a job as a scientist in the local hospital. The riverlands are plush and green which is great considring alot of SA is arid and sand. We have 3 kids aged 3, 2 and 10 months. We take to the outdoor pools in Renmark and Berri. There are loads of free activities for kids with a big adventure park in Monash which is free. There are plenty of clubs for kids and for adults. We often lunch at the Renmark club which is on the river and it is stunning. There is plenty for kids to do on the river and the wildlife is great. Kangaroos, Possums, Koalas etc all within minutes from where we live. Compared to our life in the UK, the riverlands are awsome. Do your research and know what to expect. If you would like to know anything lse, let me know. Good Luck John
