Unless you are independently wealthy and won't need to work when you get here, a three week holiday is not going to give you an idea of life here, it will be a three week holiday. I live on Sydney northern beaches, not spotted any fancy hotels here yet anyway and never heard of Nelson Bay so pretty sure it is not this way.

Seriously if i were taking a three week holiday here, I would visit northern beaches sure, but would want to travel around a bit more. I think the try before you buy is over rated and in fact is not that common.

I agree with rupert. I have this week off for Christmas. I am living in the house which I have lived in for years, but it feels totally different from when I am up at 6am each day and not home until about 6pm.

Unless you are planning on doing the commute every day, and having a terrible day at work etc, you won't get a proper feel for it.

Just have a nice time. :-)

Nelson Bay is pretty far from Sydney - I don't think that's what the OP is looking for. If you're looking for short-term rentals, have a look on Airbnb - we used it for our first rental here (in Melb) and it's a lot more secure than sites like Gumtree etc.

Agree with Rupert though - if you're coming down here for a visit, definitely do some touring around if you can. We didn't end up doing a reccie - it was too expensive and like Rupert said, spending a couple weeks somewhere isn't going to give you a good enough indication as to whether or not you're going to like living there. But that's just my opinion of course!

Just pick an area like Nelson Bay and type in accommodation- many things will turn up! Look at surrounding areas too. Lovely part of the world!

I agree, the Nelson Bay Area is my favourite of where I've visited in Oz so far, a beautiful area.

It may be a bit too far North though for the OP?

OP - it's an area north of Newcastle - probably a 2 to 2 and half hour drive if my memory is correct, well worth visiting if you venture that far North

thanks for the advice guys, like i say this is the first of many trips so i dont expect to come away with an answer but more of an idea, ill give it a try thanks for the heads up :)

I disagree with some of the above posts to an extent - I do think you can get an idea of what it might be like to live in an area from a holiday. Obviously you can't see what it's like to work here, but you can rent a furnished house or apartment and do the kind of things you would do while living here. Things like food shopping and cooking meals are easy enough. Living on a budget will also give an idea of what it is like. You could even try driving around at rush hour to get a feel of what it might be like to be commuting here. We did something similar in our last holiday here before moving over. We stayed in a house in a residential, none beach area of Adelaide and did the kinds of things you would do on the weekends while living here. I went grocery shopping, cooked meals, lived on a budget, did the washing and cleaning and even spent days hanging round the house not doing very much at all. We also drove round and checked out potential areas to live which made making a decision when we moved much easier.

To find furnished rentals try stayz.com.au or takeabreak.com.au. We've used both in the past to find places to stay in Adelaide but I believe they cover most of the country. Make sure you email the owners of any potential properties because some will give discounts for longer stays that are not always advertised on the site. Good luck.
