Considering a move to melbourne

Hi all, new here

Im 28 and live in birmingham. Me and my wife are seriously considering a move to Australia, most likely Melbourne. We have 2 children aged 7 and 5 and Iam a qualified Air Conditioning engineer with 10yrs experience. My main questions at the minute are about visas, what would we need to apply for ?? Neither of us have been before and would like to go for 12 month to see if we enjoy it and then make the move permanently. Is there a working holiday visa avaliable for a family or do we need to go through the full application process with occupation tests etc ??

thanks Sean

Hi Sean

prob your best option would be a 457 but you would need to find an employer to sponsor you or if your occupation is on state sponsored list could submit EOI and try that route, either of these would give you potentially the opportunity with employer support to apply for Permanent Residency after a period of time if you decided you want to stay. You are young enough for working holiday visa but cannot take dependants on this so not really right for your situation. I don't know about how you would get your skills recognised or even if you need to although seems most occupations have to go through some sort of process to ensure qualifications are equal to oz standards- I am a nurse so went through skill assessment but that's because I applied for independent skilled migrant I have colleagues coming over on 457 who have only had to get nursing registration approval. There are good migration agents like Go Matilda who offer initial discussion of your situation and options free of charge that is probably the way to go to get the fullest info. Good luck

Thanks for replying mem,

Ive done abit more research on the 457 and it appears to be the way il have to go. I was hoping to take a quicker, easier route as we wanted to give it more of a trial run rather than taking the plunge completely. Thanks for the info on go matilda, i will be speaking to them.
