Flight Advice

Hi guys!

Looking for a bit of advice for flights from the UK to Australia.

I know it's cheaper to fly midweek as opposed to the weekend, but are there any other tips for saving a bit of money? Like flying from/to an alternative airport?

Ideally we would like to fly around the 10th December 2012 and return the 8th January 2014, dates are very flexible at this point though. Manchester is our closest airport but where we fly from is something we can also be flexible with. As for destination airport our trip can be planned around where we arrive first so either Perth or Sydney?

Any suggestions on on what you guys think would be great! Also some advice on which airlines to look into,

Thanks guys!

Don't think it matters much at all about which airport you fly from.

I think you mean Dec 2013 and return Jan 2014?

Be aware the prices increase within the Christmas timeframe. There are cut off points. IIRC the fares come down in price after the 15 Jan so if you return inside that it'll probably cost more. As for the outgoing, I can't remember when the price hike kicks in, the 10th might find you within it again. I'd look to flying a bit earlier and returning a bit later when checking out prices online and comparing.

Hi

our closest airport is Birmingham but we ended up flying from Heathrow as flights were around 300 cheaper and x 4 that's a big difference!

Our closet airport is Glasgow but we are flying from Manchester. We are saving nearly £800 for 2 of us and an infant and that is factoring in hiring a car the day before and droping it at the airport and staying in an airport hotel overnight.

Yeah guys I put 2012 instead of 2013 :P

Thanks for all your help! I think we are stuck with only a four week window due to work only allowing us a certain amount of time off so could maybe get one of the cut offs but not both!

I'll seriously look at flying from London if it gets a little extra off.

Are there any airlines I should seriously steer clear from? I've only really looked into Emirates, Quantas and Etihad so far, any recommendations?

Thanks very much guys :D

Cathay are fine. Malaysian airlines good. Singapore airlines also. And any of the others you've mentioned are also decent. Air New Zealand might be worthwhile checking out also. They codeshare also iirc so you may find its part of the journey with them, part with another.

I am not sure BA still fly to Aus direct. I can't recall who they codeshare with these days. But they are also fine IMHO. Of course, everyone can have a crap flight now and again but I've yet to encounter repeated crapiness from an airline.

Hi guys. I would definately get your flights from Heathrow, it will be cheaper. - We have flown with Thai Airways, Qantas, Singapore and last year with Asiana and we are going again in Feb 2013 with Asiana again as the service was just as good as the others I mentioned previous ( and cheaper ). We enjoy the free stop over on the way back in Seoul South Korea. Hopes this helps

Yes, BA fly direct from Heathrow T5. If you want to go to Sydney you can fly all the way with them, or else they codeshare with OneWorld partners (including Cathay & Qantas) to other airports. Either that or you can go LHR-SYD and then on with Qantas (being OneWorld). They are now using their new aircraft (B77-300ERs) on this route, and as of this April (I think) will be flying out of and into Terminal 5. They aren't the cheapest, but keep your eye out for earlybird deals (we booked for June 2013 in August 2012) in the next few months. You'll find that there's a rush of sales and earlybird deals with all of the airlines and agents over a period of several weeks.

I looked at flights for December 2012, and departures before about 13 December were cheaper than those after that date; travel before mid-Jan was more expensive. But you may find that you cop it a bit more one way than the other. If you could travel towards the end of Jan and return in Feb you'd find that it's considerably cheaper.

Sometimes it is possible to fly to a regional airport at a reasonable cost, but it can involve flying via a European airport first - last year I flew Sydney to B'ham via Amsterdam; off-peak it can be around he same price or cheaper, but at peak season it's almost impossible to get a flight for a good price anywhere other than from/to Heathrow.

I've signed up to a number of airlines' newsletters, and some online travel agents too - that way I get notice of sales, etc. Twice it's helped me to get the best deal on flights for the dates we want/need.

Back when we flew out to validate our Visas in 2009 (and didn't care which city we flew to) found it about £100 cheaper to fly to Perth rather than Sydney. Not necessarily the case today since these things are really down to supply and demand rather than intrinsic cost, but the slightly shorter flight might still make a difference.
