All the Sydney suburbs listed are either really close to the airport so they're badly affected by aircraft noise

or

they're full of ugly Housing Commission tower blocks.

None of them are nice - though some streets in Waterloo and Beaconsfield aren't too bad - but they won't have the cheap houses.

Anyone know if Clarendon Vale is a nice area?

Clarendon Vale was built as a Housing Commission subdivision in a pleasant rural area on the eastern shore of Hobart. However it does have a reputation for social problems.

PS: Stand alone houses on their own blocks - definitely no tower blocks as in Sydney (above post).

WHat that says to me is that you need to be careful reading too much into median house prices - it's not normalised in any way for the type of property that is being bought/sold. For example, from that list you'd have to say Waterloo is a much more desirable (and expensive, like for like) area than Turrella - but you wouldn't think so from the list

How can over half a million be affordable?

A mortgage repayment on more than half a million is about 3 grand a month.

I am on the second top tier as a teacher and that would be 3/4 of my monthly wage.

How could I live off the rest, with a family including 2 kids?

Who defines what is affordable? The paper editor bringing home $250000 per year?

It's funny, I don't think of any of those being inner suburbs of Canberra and especially not Crace! Canberra is so small i guess a fair few of the suburbs fall in the 10km radius.

The article does say "median house prices".

I can't comment on the other cities but, for Hobart, those areas would be predominantly 3 bedroom houses.

And in Sydney, the prices would be for those houses that were typical of that suburb. In most cases, they'd be small, old (Victorian or Federation), 2 bedroom terraces and semis.

Turella is likely to have slightly newer houses (c 1920s) as it's a bit further out than the other suburbs.

Same with Brisbane, more middle ring. Maybe the definition comes from someone in Sydney or Melbourne who wrote the article as their inner city is deemed much bigger than the rest?

Guessing, but I don't think they are just talking about first home buyers when they discuss affordable. People with some capital behind them are looking at trading up to suburbs they can afford within 10km.

The so called "affordable" Melbourne inner suburbs aren't very nice at all and you wouldn't get much of a house for half a mil.

Yeah, something people considering Melbourne or Sydney need to factor in...you have to live a lot further away from the city to have an equivalent house than the smaller capitals. Saying that Melbourne and Sydney's inner city urbanity spreads way further so if just looking for entertainment you may not have to travel as close to the CBD for some liveliness as you might in the smaller capitals.

I chose one of the suburbs off the Brisbane list, Keperra, and this is what you get for around the $432,000 price listed:

22 mins on the train to the city in morning peak.

I agree the affordable suburbs are affordable for a reason. Grotty comes to mind, however I don't mind a bit of grotty around as it makes an area interesting. I like a good old cross section of society where I live, it give a place much more feeling. Also keeps the letter box makers and graffiti removers in work.
