Single and Moving to Sydney in Mid Jan on a 457 - where to live??

Hi All,

I am new to this forum but thought I could get some advice, I have just had my 457 via approved and will be flying into Sydney on the 16th Jan to start work in the CBD a week after, my company has given me 2 weeks in a serviced appartment in Mosman when I arrive.

I am a 32yr old single male from the UK, Initialy I was thinking I would like to live in Manly but have been told it can be a long commute to do daily and difficult to get back at night? - My budget is up to $500 per week and just wondered if people had any advice or ideas in regards to the best places to live and commute to the CBD.

As with a lot of other people I am a little bit apprehensive about moving to a new country on my own and want to live somewhere safe but also friendly and fun, Ideally as close to a beach as possible would be great but not sure if this would be possible?

Also would people suggest a houseshare or getting your own place to make some friends?

Thank you any suggestions would be very much appreciated.

Pards.

Welcome to poms in oz!

Sorry I don't know much about areas in Sydney.

Hostels are great places to meet people quickly, although often not long term friends, good to not feel alone. My husband hangs about a lot in a hostel here (I am not a social person, he is). He is a little older than you, so you would be fine. :-)

Hey Pards,

I'm also moving out, but beginning of Feb and working in CBD, George St so looking at places nearby. Haven't been given any accommodation yet by my company, but they did say they'd cover initial outlay etc.

I'm 29, male also and single and I guess in a similar boat - want somewhere clean, safe and lively!

Ive been looking at places but it's still early for me to consider them, though think I'm definitely gonna go down the flatshare route - great way to meet new people and haven't done it since Uni!

Budget is similar to yours, though would probably ideally want to limit it to $1,500 initially to have some cash to splash the first few months before good income starts coming in.

Might be an idea to pool resources and look at options as I think we may be looking at the same time?

Just a thought, but anyway I find Gumtree has been pretty useful in considering so far.

I live further up the northern beaches, perhaps twice as far as Manly from the CBD and I find the commute really very pleasant indeed and have been doing it for 2.5 years now. We are thinking we might get off the bus at Manly some days and take the ferry, just for the pleasure of it.

At night we still have buses running, in fact they run all night I believe but they do become less frequent, every 30 minutes or so. We like to get a taxi home if it is late though, plenty of taxis about and usually costs us about $60 so I expect it would be about $35 to Manly. Any map should show you that it is not a long commute.

I actually would have recommended it as a great place for someone in your situation. Surry Hills is also popular with city singletons, but I like the beach option better myself.

I don't know about sharing, I was past sharing ar 32 and your budget is not such that you have to. But I know what you mean about meeting people, still you are only going to meet one or two extra people that way.

I lived in the Northern Beaches for the first 6 months of my stay here, the commute son lost its novelty to be honest. I loved it there, but unless people you work with live there (as mostly, that'll be where you meet new friends) then dont stay there.

I've now moved to Paddington and it's ideal for me. Takes 15 minutes to get to a beach, 15 minutes to get to work and has Bondi Junction 5 minutes away for any longer commute I need for work, or for the Mrs to get a shopping fix.

If you want a flat of your own I reckon both of those areas will be too pricey. And Mosman is a bit posh-family oriented, not where I'd really live as a 30-ish singleton personally

Manly is worth looking at but I'm another one who would recommend city over beach. Commuting and going out convenience would do it for me, I would rather catch a bus to the beach once a week than a bus into the city every day to get to work, if you see what I mean.
