Qantas bans certain dog breeds

You are right Kate, my friend has a Chihuahua and it is vicious, will virtually sink it's teeth into your leg upon arrival at the house. I know it may be only a small dog, but it gives bigger dogs a run for their money any day and I am quite scared of it.

When i worked at the vets i met a very scary chihuahua. This one was a monster lol would hung off your leg or hand. Horrible spoilt one that used to sit in a handbag.

There are a lot of the small yappy dogs on my new street and at the park. My big tough staffs are scared lol they try and sneak past the gate without them noticing!

Yep we had another thread about it. I seem to remember someone saying certain dogs should never be near children.

My staffy was away meeting daves friends little girl - shes 2 and that was us only just meeting her! He was so gentle with her and just sat beside her and let her clap him then fell asleep beside her. He really loves children. Definitely lives up to the nanny dog name

SS when we lived in Australia,my kids were both aged under 10 yrs.We wanted a good family type dog and I decided to ring a few dog judges for advice on what breed to get. They all said get a staffie!Due to the fat they are excellent with kids etc.So we found a breeder through a kennel club and we ended up buying a staffie pup.I've never had such a loving, tuned it,intelligent dog!He absolutely adored me and the girls. He would "sing"with us,play, always happy to go for a walk and socialise with other dogs(although we did experience someone with a kelpie who attacked our dog,and our dog actually jumped up to me,to be picked up so try and get himself away from the other dog)if any of us were upset,he'd sit next to you on the sofa, offer his paw and give you a kiss?lol I've never had such a nice dog in all my life.

A number of breeds are banned from being owned in the UK, including:

Pit Bulls, Japanese Tosas, Dogo Argentinas, Fila Brasilliera.

It is illegal to sell, breed, give away these dogs.

Wrong. Those are the only breeds banned in the UK. Some are disputed as 'Pitbull types' but it depends on the dog. Also, 'the law' has admitted to their banning being a knee-jerk reaction, and a mistake. :)

The other breeds banned are breeds actually banned in numerous countries to keep and breed. On the short list of banned breeds. American Staffies are not on it and as others have said, ban the deed not the breed but the awkward thing there is often its only with hindsight you know the dog to be a problem or a chewer etc.

Great post melza! The majority of them are so soft and in tune with your emotions. I came home crying from work one day and they instantly came over and cuddled into me. Ive never had a dog thats done that before.

I know what you mean about singing lol they should bring out a cd!

The singing was abit of a shock actually SS!My kids were practising singing for an end of year concert for school. We were in the loungeroom, and our dog kept looking at us turning his head(You know hon, when they look confused???lol)Anyway with that he just tilted his head back and began howling with the girls? So funny!Another time me and the girls took him to the local creek to go "Yabbying"So there we are up to our knees in water, lifting rocks and having a look for yabbies! Our dog is also standing in the creek and all of a sudden he stuck his head underwater and we can only assume he was helping us to look for them too!lol What a dog!I still miss him to this day and he passed away over 10 years ago!

I was laughing at this post so much! The singing is so funny. Yday when we were visiting daves friend, eric was getting his pic taken with the little girl and we said "say cheese!" And he started doing a funny howl lol. Ours also stick their heads under water to get big rocks. Strange breed!

Ours is a Staffie/sharpei mix and he hates water, must be more Sharpei then! He is still gorgeous though.

Ours pick and choose when they like it lol they dont usually like the rain but love swimming. Then yesterday the patio flooded so eric had to go through the huge puddle to get up the steps, he tried to tiptoe up but when it came back to coming in the house he couldnt bring himself to jump from the step into the puddle lol! Hes a big wimp sometimes.

Your sharpei must be lovely! Hope you've got a pic you can put up :)

I walk many types of dogs, because I am a dog walker.

I have found that the only people who want to keep banned dogs and close relatives around are the owners, and the dog trainers.

If people in Australia believe that only farmers and authorities should carry guns, then perhaps people should consider that only similar niche groups should be allowed to own dogs that have been bred over hundreds of years for the sole purpose of guarding or killing other animals. Yes the pit bull and its derivatives etc. It has been selectively bred for strength and aggression. The chance of the average person being able to fight of one of these weapons, should they turn aggressive if very low. I think we have similar rules about keeping pet crocodiles and venomous snakes in suburban homes.

A big ps. would be that I rarely see restricted or dangerous breed dogs being walked. Hence most are not socialised, which for any dog increases the chance of an attack. There are many reasons why dangerous breed dogs are not walked daily and socilialised, but probably mainly for the safety of all other off lead dog park dog owners.

The other side of the coin for many of those banned breeds is that because they are banned, people either simply no longer own them or can't take them to public places as it is quite easy to identify some of the specific breeds (whereas the pitbull types its harder because of the Staffy aspect). Hence not seeing them. If they are identified and owner found, the dog is taken away and can be destroyed if its not registered, neutered and so on.

If its like the UK they are now banned and if you owned one before the ban you were meant to neuter it, microchip and so on and not breed from it. Once the dog dies there is no going out and getting another. At least not unless you go somewhere very dodgy. There are not supposed to be any pups around to buy as the breeds are banned.

The only one I hear on a regular basis that people do seem to acquire are pitbull types. There are numerous court cases going on trying to prove or disprove a dogs breeding because they are putbulls or supposed pit bull types. People claim they are part staffy or large staffies and its hard to disprove in some cases.

So archie what do you consider as dangerous? Since you said dangerous AND restricted

It is true that many non socialised dogs, and dogs not walked regularly can be very anti social dogs. When I have tested their socialisation at a client meeting, with me and my dog, I make a choice based on the safety of my pack and anyone I meet. Sometimes I have taken dogs that we have muzzled as a precaution. I would not have taken these if I thought they were a real risk. I would not take a large aggressive dog that I could not control.

I think that mostly experts who ban dogs do so for good reasons. Mostly these are fighting dogs (such as the pit bull) that have a jaw lock mechanism, or guard type dogs should also be restricted. People will tell me that their German Shepherd is beautiful and gentle. However when one of these decide to turn, the result is not beautiful or gentle and not even the owner will usually be able to easily over power a guard dog set on killing another dog. OK I like GS, but I know that I rarely see these in off lead parks, and there are a lot in Australia. This tells me that many of them have become antisocial. This is why I see most of the ones in off lead parks being walked on lead, and ones that snap at other dogs. But of course these dogs are not restricted so we rely on bad owners (one who do not walk daily) to do the right thing. THAT is how a breed gets a bad name. Yes I know there are a lot of good GS owners and a lot of social GS's out there. This is just an example of a dog that I know most people could not fight off their arm or leg, if a GS 'switches'.

So I get that small dogs can be snappy and even bite through lack of socialisation, but I don't see these as a big risk to society or likely to cause death to adults. Because so many owners do not walk their dogs regularly and train them, the large guard dogs should probably be restricted and the owners have regular control tests. We have people on P plates with restricted licenses (not able to drive powerful cars), but anyone can own a dog (of any size and almost any breed) and abuse them it seems. Fines are low, and owners often dont get fined until their restricted breed escapes and kills.

If we cant trust people to self regulate and do the right thing with dog walking and training, that is why bans and restrictions have come in, to safeguard the general public. Have you ever wondered why so many drug dealers keep pit bulls on their property? Its not about cuteness or even controllability.

By the way, I mind many different breeds of dogs, and even walk guard type ones, because I keep a close n eye on them, and I test them as much as I can before, I am just saying that you are 'making a rod for your back' if you choose to buy a big powerful dog fighting or guard dog, and don't walk it daily and socialise it. AND EVEN THEN, ITS IN THE BREED HOW THEY MAY BEHAVE BADLY ONE DAY. I still cant get over that many people in the US think its cool to have a half WOLF cross breed?

This week in quarantine as a private dog walker (NO CONNECTION WITH GOVERNMENT OR AQIS) I have minded a bull mastiff and a dogue de bordeux. These are big dogs, but not of the killer variety, and they were very gentle and social. I love dogs, but I also value human's safety, and since policing dangerous dog owners has failed regularly in the past, that is why legislation ends up being proposed. A shame but often valid.

I boggle that this is even legal and not well regulated. But then in some states they can keep wild cats, tigers, lions and other wild animals with little more than a piece of paper to say its ok.

I've only been properly bitten once - by a toy poodle ..... little sh*t

I've not met many of them. when I was a lot younger our beagle bit me on the face. I haven't a clue how it didn't do more damage but it was just a small scar.

had the usual bites at vets and kennels from the happy dogs lol nothing serious though. beginning to think animals don't like me lol no cat bites tho - thank God!!
