Lyndilou
[h=2]Hi all[/h] Im fairly new to this so please bare with me as I get to grips! Here's our story! After many discussions, we decided it would be best for us to up root the family from Dublin and head for Oz, our aim was to relocate to Melbourne (friend living there) . Himself is an electrician and should have no problem gaining sponsorship (could not go for resident visa) And so we went about on finding out what we needed to do. Long story short, He completed his QSTR through Vetassess and we thought he would be offered a job in no time.. Basically he has applied to many many positions in Melbourne, its been 8 weeks now and we've had no interest at all. He has 10+ years experience in domestic, industrial and commercial electrical areas . . Im wondering if Im missing something?!! Would love to hear from anyone that would have any tips or ideas that could send us in the right direction. Thanking you in advance! Lynda
AJ
It is very hard to get sponsorship actually. There are very few companies that sponsor trades, you would probably need a skilled PR visa. You have to be licenced in what ever state you are going to and they all have different licences, Victoria being one of the hardest to get. Read some of the electricians posts - it is not just as easy as applying for a job! Good luck
Petals
As the previous poster said its not easy and all the experience in the world will not get a job from overseas. As has been said read through the Electricians thread on the Jobs forum and you will find a lot of information http://www.esv.vic.gov.au/Electricity-Professionals/Licensing-and-registration/Overseas-Qualifications Have a look at this web site. As its not straight forward transfer of skills, companies do not sponsor people.
Lyndilou
thanks so much for the replies, we knew it wouldnt be that easy but thought we would have some sort of interest.. we could not apply for the skilled migration visa as he had not got the experience required, I've heard that this requirement has changed now.. We already spent a fair bit trying to get everything for the agents and vetassess. Will have a look in the Electricians Threads may get a few ideas from there! Thanks again

Lynda The right direction is probably to forget about sponsorship and look to get the qualifications and experience required for skilled migration down the line. It is very hard for most people to find sponsorship and especially hard for trades, I don't think I have ever seen one manage that!
colinmaclec
The only way you will get sponsored is if you were here on a WHV and already working for a company and they decide they want to keep you. You will never get sponsored as an electrician from Ireland. The OSTR only gives you a restricted license and he would have to do 1 years gap training as well. There are a lot of electricians with PR and OSTR that are in Australia and finding it tough to secure jobs.
Lyndilou
We have heard of a number of trades getting sponsorship from interviews through skype, although none were electricians, some were mechanics, etc. We're aware further training is required and he has no problem in doing that training. We're willing to do whats necessary regarding training etc. This is really turning out to be a nightmare at this stage.. Its been going on so long now Im going to look into the skilled migration visa, see the costs and time frame it will take.. although I may be taking a risk with that as it seems there's very little chance of getting work out there! I am also going to look into the mining sector to see if there are anything out there that may suit us, again thanks for your input.
Rupert
We have heard of a number of trades getting sponsorship from interviews through skype, Really? I have been reading immigration forums for nearly four years now, since I started my own application and honestly I have not come across this trend. I have only ever seen posts like yours from tradies, all wondering why they can't find a sponsor. So the good news is that you are not doing anything wrong, you are facing what most will face. Im going to look into the skilled migration visa, see the costs and time frame it will take.. although I may be taking a risk with that as it seems there's very little chance of getting work out there! I am also going to look into the mining sector to see if there are anything out there that may suit us, again thanks for your input. Getting a sponsorship and finding work once already here with a PR visa are two completely different matters. Unless you / OH have experience in mining, then you are possibly barking up the wrong tree with this idea too. Like getting sponsorship, getting into mining is very difficult for most people. VERYSTORMY
I am a manager in mining. We do have a need for electricians. However, we would require a minimum of 2 years mining experience. You would also require to be fully certified WA and experience of very high voltage.

Lynda Hi, it took me about four months from arriving to finding a sponsor for a 457, worked out well in the end because after a few years we went on to PR with the same company. I treated finding a job like a job itself and spent hours and hours in the library and on the 'net researching, on the phone, and in meetings. My job came from a cold call based on a 'contact us' page on their website; so as usual with job hunting don't just look on Seek and apply for jobs - send an EOI to companies you'd like to work for. The company that sponsored me offered additional training and I eventualy left to follow a different career path altogether based on this training and experience gained on the job. I think the main point is that if you are determnied enough you will find a sponsor, you may have to lower your expectations and treat it like a first job but sponsors are out there. Good luck. Lyndilou
Friends of friends here have had interviews through skpye and have gained employment but again I will say that none of these were electricians.. Some of the job specs we have seen for the mines do not mention anything about having experience, although if he had I'm sure it would be of great advantage! It just seems impossible at this stage, they want you to hold a full electrical license but you need to get over there, work, do your logs and exams. which he wants to do but getting there that the tricky part! Hi David, Thanks so much for replying you given us some hope.. So far all the info we have been hearing is knocking us back. I understand you need to put into it what you want to get out of it. Every option we try to go down something comes up that it can no longer be an option for us.. He is willing to work at anything at this stage.. David did you use a holiday visa when you were over there looking for sponsorship.. Sorry for all the questions I'm new to this... have left it up to himself the last while and he's losing hope at this stage. Again I thank everyone for their input,
David Kenning
David did you use a holiday visa when you were over there looking for sponsorship.. , Yes, both my (girlfriend at the time and now) wife and I were on normal tourist visas. It was a gamble for us - giving up secure well-paid jobs and coming with nothing, but I had an excellent work history (entertainment industry) to back me up and was prepared from day one. It's not easy but it can be done. Even if we don't stay forever I will never regret the gamble we took. We have had an up and down ride but so far I've gained a wife, two kids and a new careeer in six years. I'm certain that I would not have had the personal development and challenges that I've had here had we stayed in Tawian or moved back to England. Good luck. David.
