Townsville to Outback - The man in his 20s, who wore nothing more than a pair of silken boxer shorts and thongs for most of the 17-hour trip, hailed a cab outside Tom's Tavern on Nathan St on Thursday about noon.

He was carrying a small bag filled with money, and a carton of beer.

Veteran taxi driver Mike Caldwell, 68, who has been driving taxis in Townsville for 30 years, was more than happy to oblige after his passenger paid $4900 cash up front for the drive home to the Northern Territory.

It is understood the man, who is a well-known local, then withdrew more cash to take another taxi adventure.

Reminds me of the Sydney socialite, Bea Miles. She took a taxi from Sydney to Perth just to pick wild flowers!

Bea Miles Aberrant, brilliant, individualistic, eccentric, these are just a few adjectives that describe this very unique character that roamed the streets of Kings Cross and other parts of Sydney from the years of the great depression to the 1960s.

Well known for riding in taxis then refusing to pay the fare, Bea did travel by taxi to Perth to pick wild flowers and, on another occasion in 1953, to Melbourne via Broken Hill. On both of these expeditions she paid the full fare of a shilling a mile!

Highly literate and knowledgeable, Bea was a devotee of Shakespeare, selling quotations and readings on the kerbside of Sydney's streets and on the steps of the Mitchell Library.

Bea passed away in December 1973 aged 71 leaving as her legacy a memorable and generous personality.

Cheers, Bobj.
