Guest yoniga
Hello everyone! First of all I am sorry if I have posted this thread in a wrong forum. Currently I am studying engineering in a university and I will graduate next year ie 2013 and the name of my University is in Recognised Institutions list. So that makes me eligible candidate to apply for this visa given that I have fulfilled all other requirements. I have a question regarding the Recognised Graduate Visa. It is written on immi.gov.au website, "As a holder of this visa, you may apply for permanent residence at any time if you are able to meet the passmark on the General Skilled Migration points test" Suppose if I meet the passmark on GSM point test, so I am eligible to apply for permanent residence in Australia any time. However the immi.gov.au says some other thing about Independent (Residence) Visa (Subclass 885) that this visa will be closed to all new applications from 31 December 2012. (http://www.immi.gov.au/skilled/general-skilled-migration/886/) So what does this mean exactly? If I have Reconised Graduate visa and I meet the passmark on GSM points test so I won't be able to apply for the Permanent residence then? Someone please shed some light on it!!!! Mark Northam
Hi Yoniga - Unfortunately you'll miss the transitional benefits of the 885 visa as it closes to new applications on 31 December 2012, so direct application for an independent skilled PR visa based on holding a 476 visa is no longer possible after 31 December. There are other skilled visas available, however they generally require lodging an Expression of Interest and awaiting an invitation to apply for the visa. You may wish to look at the new benefits of the 485 visa if you received your first student visa on or after 5 November 2011 as under some circumstances that visa will provide 2 years work rights to Bachelor degree earners, otherwise the 485 visa normal pathway can provide 18 months of work rights in Australia after graduation if your occupation is on the Skilled Occupation List. TeeTMI
Hi Yoniga The 885/886 is an old route that was left open to students and graduates who held specified visas and met certain criteria back in Feb 2010 and changes that occurred at that time - it is not relevant to your situation. The visas that DIAC website is referring to in their comment "As a holder of this visa, you may apply for permanent residence at any time if you are able to meet the passmark on the General Skilled Migration points test" which are relevant to you are now within the SkillSelect program http://www.immi.gov.au/skills/skillselect/ take a look at the 189 and 190 options and the points required. As you are just graduating it is unlikely you would currently meet the points score for these visas (although it is possible so do check), however by spending your time well on the Recognised Graduate Visa you will often be able to find the extra points required to apply under the SkillSelect program. Good luck Tee

Guest yoniga
Well it doesn't look that easy but I could get the pass mark of 60 if I score 20 points for IELTS! 25+15+20=60! Getting 8 bands in all components is difficult and would require a lot of dedicated hard work!

Good luck Tee well I just now had a look at the current point test system for the Skilled Independent subclass 189 visa. so it goes like that age 18-24: 25 point Bachelor's degree: 15 points IELTS score: 10/20 points (I will have to take IELTS exam with solid preparation to score 8 bands in all components. Let's hope and aim for the best) By looking at their requirements, I have to ask a few questions, 10 points are awarded for a diploma or trade qualification which should be completed in Australia or qualification of recognized standard. I have a Higher National Diploma in Mechanical Engineering from a renowned college in Scotland. So would these 10 points be awarded to me? As the official website says that the documents should be provided to show I have a qualification recognised by the assessing authority in the assessment of the skilled occupation! http://www.immi.gov.au/skills/skillselect/index/visas/subclass-189/ Moreover once I have graduated from the University in England, I will be eligible for the membership of Institute of Mechanical Engineers UK as an Incorporated Engineer. So would that also help me in getting assessed from the Engineers Australia? Thanks everyone! Waiting for the replies
blossom
If you didn't do your diploma in Australia you won't get those 10 points for it. So no.

TeeTMI
You can only claim points for one of the educational qualification options - so you could not claim points for both the diploma plus the bachelors degree. If you are happy to commit to living and working in a particular state for 2 years you might also look at the 190. There are some online sites where you can practice for IELTS which can be useful if you are after a high score.

Not only that, the diploma wasn't taken in Australia, so the op couldn't claim the points for it even if you could claim two lots.
