jimithechew Posted October 21, 2012 Share Posted October 21, 2012 Hi all, I am currently a Projects Surveyor working in London for a specialist sub-contractor, dealing with the usual MC's (Kier, Jerram Falkus, Lend Lease, Balfour Beatty. etc...). work in a variety of sectors, and deal with contract values from £1 million to £30+ million . I will be heading over to Perth in Dec, and I am looking for work in the same role. In Oz it would be called a Contracts Administrator. I have been touching base with recruitment agencies and keeping an eye out on the job sites, but if anyone knows of any posts opening or currently need a CA then please do PM me. Agencies are a waste of time, no one normally recruits from end dec till beginning of feb, the only real work about is for civils with the main tier contractors. Commercial as its called over here is very slow just tweak your cv to be more audtralianised and approach the companies direct. Keep plugging away something will come up. I'm a contracts/project manager working in SE uk for last 15 years, I am chartered through IOB and have formal H&S qualifications. All my qualifications transfer and I am also looking at Adelaide although 189 would allow me to take a position anywhere. Ive been advised that I should be desirable however I wait to see. Well, we arrive in 6 weeks, and so far I have 3 interviews lined up 2 the day after I arrive and one a few days after. One of the 3 initially said I meet the criteria but cannot offer me an interview because I am not in Oz, but do contact us if you think about emigrating one day.... I pointed out to her that I arrive (as it is stated on my CV and covering letter) in mid Dec, email back straight away saying.... ah, missed that when can we interview you! lol Well, I don't hold out much hope, but I suppose If I throw enough **** at the wall, something will stick! I think they see a uk address and just stop reading!!! keep is posted with how you get on. I know myself that I'm currently working 12 hour days with no possibilities of an end in sight. Clients have become realy demanding with impossible requests and contractors just constantly taking the piss thinking they are above their station. I posted an ad here not so long ago, and we are still looking generally, but we won't interview until you are here or,you have a visa and are about to fly. Thanks mate You need to be Degree qualified with 2 years experience to get a positive skills assessment from AIQS. But you could get a sponsorship for 457 without requiring skills assessment. You could look at Construction Estimator, see if you can fit your skills in to this occupation. This occupation would require state nomination but it is currently on the WA State Occupation List. I have looked into this in WA as yes, it's do-able with the HND (surely VETASSESS would class QS as highly relevant) and I have over 1 year of the past five in a QS/Estimator role for a small consultancy...basically getting the foot in the door with main contractors, pricing, winning and then financially managing contracts for groundworks and brick/blockwork subbies. Did more estimating (pre-contract) than post contract stuff, so easily satisfy the 20 hour a week rule. Only problem is it doesn't exist anymore! I have payslips but no contract of employment and no chance of getting a copy. Currently on the look-out for a decent estimating role, but tempted to just put the application in now, as at the end of the day I qualify. But with no evidence, I know what i'd say in their shoes! Pretty stoked (not a fan of that word but it does sum up how I feel!) at the job and 'Package' offered to me, granted I had some help from friends pointing me in the direction of who to speak to! but I suppose that's how it goes, if you know someone then it always helps, irrespective of what line of work you are in! I may have been shown the door, but you have to convince them to let you in. (what a I going on about?!?!) Will keep you posted! off to bed now as its knocking on 1am.... Hi Jim I'm a contractor heading out in early April have run my own construction company for the last 15 years director. All of the pm and ca jobs advertised insist on at least a years experience in WA it is different over here. Jtc was lucky and so was I in getting work the work is slowing up over here unless your into heavy civils. Be prepared to diversify the project house builders over here do not have any qs' at all it's schedulers and estimators. Also in commercial construction it's mainly pre cast panels, afs logic wall or R9 sips type panels, they love concrete over here. Most slabs are ground bearing not suspended, scaffold is quick stage style and trades are different as well. I had one recruitment agent say to me that she didn't put me forward for a job because she said the wage would be too low for me... I said I will be the one to judge that! and also (as Bensdad said) there is this 'WA exp essential' plastered everywhere..... it is frustrating, but you have to keep plugging away. Regards current occupation I work as pm and cm but also have H&S qualifications so hopefully will be attractive in several fields. Would not expect to earn a fortune, just have a steady comfortable income also happy to adapt to both different technologies and working methods. Would you suggest being an AIB member before coming over and would you know where to get a copy of the Australian Building Codes other than purchasing new?
