Hiya everybody

I've just had the man from the removal company to come around and give me a quote to stick everything we own in a container. He has advised us that it would not be worth taking our washing machine or hoover as it is unlikely that we will be able to clean them to a suitable standard for the Australian customs and excise. Is this true or is it a bit of baloney. Anyone out there taken their own washing machines and hoovers.

My thought is that he talking aload of old codswallop re the washing mashine...erm its a washing machine....you can't get much cleaner than that!! (unless you wash your local rugby teams kit and it breaks down mid wash!!)

We have sent our washing machine, and were actually recommended too by all the removal companies who came to qoute...front loaders are well expensive in aus and I have this nightmare about opening the lid of a toploder and finding a snake inside (was in take a break so it must be true!!) :biglaugh:

Sorry...going off topic again!

Re the Hoover, not really sure...never heard of that, but it could make sense if you hoover the dog, or the leaves in the garden??? We decided not to take ours as it needed replacing anyway.

Cheers

Our guy said taking vacuum cleaners is no problem as long as they are cleaned properly. He suggested taking it to a garage and using the air line, usually used for pumping up tyres, to give it a good blast inside.

We've since bought a small compressor, so are going to use that instead.

I've read that Dysons, etc are quite pricey in Oz, so we'll definitely be taking ours.

I've had 2 quotes so far. Re the hoover one said don't take, the other said fine to take as long as is thoroughly cleaned - he suggested that as long as the customs guys could small Jayes cleaning fluid - it should be fine!

One removal company we had round suggested cleaning stuff with Jeyes fluid and then a very good point was raised by another removal person - Jeyes fluid stinks. It is not a smell that disappears quickly and can you imagine receiving all your stuff stinking of Jeyes!!!!

We cleaned outdoor stuff with muckoff (pink stuff OH used on his motorbike) and was also advised that bicarb of soda works very well - it is quite good actually!

With my dyson I used the manual and stripped off everything I could and washed it thoroughly and reassembled. It came through with no problems whatsoever. Or if you have a dyson, take out the filters, buy new ones and leave them in the wrapper inside the cylinder so that quarantine can see that you're not smuggling in any dust! Dysons are a bit more expensive over here and the range isn't as good as the UK but the prices are dropping slowly!

We took our washing machine over when we went to Sydney and didn't have to have it cleaned beforehand. We took our hoover too although we never used it whilst we were there because we bought a house with a ducted vacuum system. Front loaders are very expensive in Australia so I would definately recommend taking the washing machine.

we brought our washing machine and hoover. We were advised to not use the washer for a few days prior to packing to let it drain fully, the hoover (vax) got through no problem too

Hi

There havin' a laugh - i brought my washing machine and hoover (a henry woudnt wanna be without him he's too good) never had any feedback from customs re these items what so ever.

Along with this we also brought all electrical items from phone (landlines yes they do work here in oz) to alarm clocks steros etc etc

Just so you are aware - the only thing customs checked for dirt (that they told us) was hubbys golf trolley and a box of shoes thats all !!!

thanks for all that guys. Hubby is breathing a sigh of relief as our hoover is a Dyson and I know they're expensive in Oz.

Can I ask which firms you used which said to just clean and take your hoovers and washing machines and did the company do all of your packing?

I'm a bit concerned about the washing machine arriving smelling all musty from being shut up all that time as it will still be wet in the pipes where you cannot get to them to dry them out - does this happen:huh:?

not washing machine, but bought loads of pine and expected to be called in due to the european pine beetle or what ever its called, anway most of our pine was raw and untreated and cleared customs no prob. as for washing machines, we thought all machines were top loaders but found that front loaders are popular so if is new bring it as with all electric stuff all u have to do is change a plug.

I used the firm of 'my hubby' to clean the stuff that might get checked - he turned out to be quite a good scrubber (pun intended lol)

My inlaws have moved over to australia three times (yes three) most recently last August and they have taken their washing machine and Oreck vacuum cleaner all three times with no problems. They washed the washing machine and then hoovered the inside of the vacuume - removed all strings, etc. and cleaned brushes and didn't have a problem.

We used John Mason and they came in and packed everything. They did a fab job in the UK and the guys were so good they even worked while they drank tea!

Crown also get a very good write up on here, many members have used them - they also said we could bring the dyson and washing machine.

We brought our tumble dryer with us too - no probs there either.

What about Fridge freezers then, is there a problem with them being taken over. We were going to buy a new American fridge freezer but have heard that there may be a problem with it working. Anyone know? Thanks.

for everyone taking their fridges to any country as long as it is stood upright it will be ok as long as it is the same power supply which in oz it is.

also when your fridge arrives at your home dont switch on for 24 hrs.

when you buy a fridge anywhere in the uk they are made in europe, america or asia so they have already travelled anyway.hope this helps.

cheers kdal oh.

Hi,

That sounds like a great deal?! ($300 for a front loading washing machine in Oz!) I couldn't find anything anywhere near that cheap in Perth - what State are you in and is it a Chinese/Korean brand? (Have been told they only last a year or so??) I just bought a brand new Zanussi here in UK for £340 (quite a big discount on sale) to take with me - been told equivalent will cost £1200++ over there (in WA)...

hi selah, i have to ask 3 times, they must know there stuff! is it worth it? we cant decide wether to ship stuff or sell it, we have no crown jewels but we have semi good stuff and some very new stuff and all the stuff like toys and bikes, be good if we could have a poll anyone wish they had brought all there stuff when they didn't. i mean totally from scratch, its like getting your bottom drawer ready, does having your own bits and pieces help you settle better as well, not forgetting the cost issues? thanx

JUST A NOTE FROM A FRIEND ALREADY IN BRISBANE, AUSTRALIA ALREADY WHO IS IN THE KNOW ABOUT LEAVING YOUR OLD WASHING MACHINE IN THE UK AND GETTING A NEW OVER THERE...

APPARENTLY THE NEW GOVERNMENT INTRODUCED IN NOV07 HAVE JUMPED ON THE CARBON FOOTPRINT DRIVE AND WATER SHORTAGE TOPLOADERS USE MORE WATER THAN FRONTLOADERS AND AS THERE IS A WATER SHORTAGE IN AUSTRALIA THEY ARE TRYING EVERYTHING TO CONSERVE, THEREFORE IF YOU BUY A NEW FRONTLOADER AT $900 YOU RECEIVE (CLAIM) $200 BACK FROM THE GOVERNMENT THUS MAKING YOUR NEW MACHINE $700 = £305 APPROX ( RATE 2.3 )

HOPE THIS HELPS A LITTLE, ON THE DYSON TAKE YOURS WITH YOU HAS 3 TO 4 TIME THE UK COST AT THE MO.

REGARDS, NATALIE.
