benlast Posted January 17, 2008 Share Posted January 17, 2008 However, the woman today - the single mum was an inspiration, but WHY did they show her houses that she could not afford to live in and a house that you wouldn't get anyone to live in. I'd imagine it's because the programme is made for the audience watching it, not for the exclusive benefit of the people taking part :smile: In all of the WDU programmes I've seen, they've shown a range of houses at different prices to give you (the viewer, not just her, the visitor) at least some idea of what you can get for different amounts of money. And the 'grotty' house did look bad, but most of that was decor, and some people would of course be happy to buy it, strip it and redo it. Or even knock it down and rebuild on the land. I was looking forward to seeing a bit of Cairns too, but you didn't get to see that much of it...only him moaning about the houses being too big, or too expensive, or too clinical! Was a bit strange them being shown a 5 bedroomed house though, when there was just the 2 of them! And the whole way through they both voted for the UK...until back in the studio with Nadia when the wife voted for OZ! The lady yesterday was a single parent with 2 lovely lads, She was fantastic and I hope she really makes it. What spirit ahh. We also had the man last week who had a disability and that too takes an enormous amout of courage. I did feel a bit sorry for the Woman today and know her field was a tricky one, a sought of Nutritionist or something like that self employed here in the UK. That's a very specialised field. I imagine more in a city like Sydney or Melbourne, she could do well, as that specialisation depends on volume demand. Cairns wouldn't really offer that, and the BBC should have known that. And it seemed a sad situation to me, you could almost see the sadness somehow in her face, as she contemplates life in a new Country possibly alone. Very tough. Yes, the single mum yesterday was just wonderful! Her two boys were such a credit to her, and I wish her all the luck in the world with her new life! And I'm sure they will have a wonderful life in Oz. She seemed like such a determined lady, and she really wanted a much better life for her boys. I did feel really sorry for the Cairns lady today...must be so difficult if your partner doesn't share your dream. Lucky for my my OH is 100% commited to our move too! "not quite right" shame that. take the fox couple they dangle the "carrot" of a totally AWESOME house and then tell them its out of price range.. but no they have to buy that house even if it means working to death! i mean 2 people and poss one baby oviously need a 4 bed with enough room to swing an elephant!!!! i dont know bout anyone else but we live in a one bed ex council flat so will be lookin for a 2 bed moderate house. do they exist in australia?????? hey stu were u form the uk? give us the true picture what are the hours really and the work like ( i won tell ur boss :jiggy:) how is carins? we really liked the look of it. how is the tempreture and how hard is it to get work (luke is a plumber im a hairdresser) sorry for all the questions :realmad: Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

They could afford the house they saw and she would be on more than him going on a previous job she had there, the programme made out she would find it unlikely to get a job which was untrue. Stu will be working with the guy from the fox couple and judging by what they said they will be finished and in the pool by 3.15 even that wasnt quite true apparently :biglaugh: If I could afford a house like that at their age i would be going for it knowing the house prices are going to keep rising. He was doing the news when i was a baby so he must be in his 70,s , You could tell from the beginning that he did not want to go , but she did , he even said she could go alone and she didnt even say no to him . Bloomin loved it! Yes i was from the uk, up north in the lake district. Our hours arnt that bad. Its a 38 hour week and everything over that is time and a half. We do get finished on time most of the time but if a job can be finished we do. You hear a lot of guys say working over here is more laid back but i would disagree. Maybe its our company but its pretty full on, we do earn our money. I used to love the sun, would lay in it all day every day on holiday but here i just keep out of it. Im in no way trying to put anyone off and can only speak for cairns but the sun here is very intense. half an hour and your well on your way to burning. You will find luke will have to do a fair bit of outside stuff, all the drainage around houses, storm drains that sort of thing. I guess its a case of taking the rough with the smooth living over hear. Oh and work for trades here is mad, so much of it. I got a job the day i walked off the plane. Not sure if i was lucky or what but its like iv said to many peolpe get out there and look for it. Best advice i can give is go round the companys and see them, dont ring up. Hi Ginell, Wouldnt go too much on what they have to say on the programme. Just use the programme as way of seeing abit about the country i.e. houses, views etc.. and thats about it really. Couple on there today have their own restaurant here in the UK, but I am sure Nadia told them that in Oz they would have to work 2 years or so before they could open their own business!! Dont think that is right. I know there are rules prob such as having to employ ex amount of people etc... but they didnt help them look into this or seem to know anything about it. Anyway because he thought he would have to work for someone else again they choose to stay here in the UK!! Shame as more info could have been given to them and the viewers. With a very successful restaurant in High Wycombe, which he and his wife have created and built up, I ask the question who in their right mind would sell up, move to the other side of the World and start working for someone else as a Sous chef? My understanding is if your on a permanent visa your OK and can set up your own business. They mislead people a lot with this point, and it's wrong. The show gets worse I think. Who chose this couple today I wonder, they were nice people, very successful and good luck to them I say, but they were hardly your average example of people looking to migrate !! He said it was hard for the first year but when people realised he was staying work really picked up. We've only watched a few but deffo certian episodes come over purely as property hunting - alla a place in the sun!!! We're only on the 1st rung of the ladder regarding actually jetting off for good, so when we caught on to the show we were glued. Was expecting to see alot more of general areas rather than inside of digs, but I guess they do have to draw you in to the actual people on the show and their dilemmas. Just booked a hol for this year to have a good nosy around Melbourne and see if it's a fit. Hope to be getting our applications in ASAP. Anyways looking forward joining in & sharing the journey. kellyjamie Posted January 23, 2008 Share Posted January 23, 2008 we were the same claire we switched off the chef couple after the house hunting they and that episode were sssssooooooo boring!! anyone see this mornings? revisited a family that went to brisbane but ended up in adelaide. they seem to still love it but the emotions of friends and family is still very hard after a year, tho i have read on several occassions you must allow at least 2 years to settle!
