Guest Diane Willo Posted January 14, 2008 Posted January 14, 2008 Hi there just been wondering about shipping costs A lady I spoke to once, who came home then went back said "at least I know how to do it right this time" and continued to say how she would ship everything out 2nd time round, sorry I can't remember her reasons now. It does make me think though on top of all the other costs just how much will it cost to start from scratch? sofa, beds, bedding,pots, pans,washer, dryer fridge the list goes on I also don't know how much it costs to ship everything either. Just one of my many many thoughts buzzing around my head:wacko: Diane
Guest Mrs Braveheart Posted January 14, 2008 Posted January 14, 2008 Hi Diane What I would suggest you do is get a couple of quotes for shipping over your furniture and take it from there. We bought everything here from cutlery etc to beds & bedding. We furnished a 4x2 for approx $13 000. Janette

calNgary Posted January 14, 2008 Posted January 14, 2008 we only brought 18 boxes of personal and kitchen items originally,,we bought all our furniture here,i think if you shop around especially when the sales are on you can get some good deals.As Gizmo said though bedding is expensive,id definately stock pile before you come ,,good luck with everything Cal x
ali Posted January 15, 2008 Posted January 15, 2008 We brought everything - no way we could have replaced everything we brought for the cost of the container £3,800. We purchased some items here - 8 seater patio table, barbecue, fridge, single bed, Queen size bed, chests of drawers etc, big TV (not essential but you know boys and their toys!!). We found that brining stuff meant we didn't panic buy and get something just because we needed it - rather it gave us time to look around and buy what we wanted. Ali
Guest HPRYCE Posted January 15, 2008 Posted January 15, 2008 We brought everything with us in a 40ft container and it cost nearly £11k including insurance but if we'd left it and started again here buying similar it would have cost us many times this. We debated about some things like washing machine as it was 6/7 yrs old but decided to in the end and glad we did as a comparable one here in Melbourne is around AUD$1300.
Guest alliekate Posted January 15, 2008 Posted January 15, 2008 Hi there - we bought nothing at all but personal stuff ( which has still not arrived). And 2 suitcases. But we bought this house with all the furniture included - you would not BELIEVE what we have, and we were very lucky. Leather sofas, leather recliners, a second three piece suite, an antique four poster bed, all the white goods, dressers, kitchen stuff. Garden furniture, and a greenhouse with over 150 orchids. And we got it for next to nothing (God bless the last owner) That certainly eased the pain of dumping everything in the UK . And we are taking every scrap of furniture back to the UK with us - if I can work out how to do it, I'll post the sale photos on here and you can see how lucky we were. (house is for sale at Yabulu, Townsville on the Harcourts website). We were very lucky, and blessed to be going home with much better furniture than we left behind ! Best wishes, Allie xxxxxxxxxxx

I am very curious to find out what brings people home. We are looking to try it for 12 months to see if we could settle , I would love to think that we can but will not sell our home here until I'm sure it's the right thing to do. I don't want to feel trapped . We have a nice life in England we would just like to have a better way of life Hopefully in Aus Regards Diane

Guest alliekate Posted January 15, 2008 Posted January 15, 2008 Very long story, ( see other threads) but I think it boiled down to picking the wrong place for us, personal loss, and just needing to be near our family. I am an old country bumpkin at heart, and neither of us want to live here. But we both do love OZ (we got married here), it's just the reality of living here hasn't worked out for us.

The insurance bumped the price up, you don't realise how much things would cost to replace until you add it up. My daughter has a victorian dolls house which when we totalled it all up (furniture etc.,) it was into the hundreds. We used John Masons who were brilliant Ali
