Guest mutikonka Posted January 14, 2008 Posted January 14, 2008 Any Sydney-based poms interested in a get together on Australia Day? It would be nice to meet some of you other Sydney PIO people and have a chat about our experiences so far in Oz. Might I suggest the Harbour View Hotel down at the Rocks from noon onwards? It's a great olde worlde pub that is very handy for all the Harbour-based activities that day (Ferry Race, Tall Ships etc), they welcome kids (outside) plus they do a great sausage sizzle. And the beers not bad either. If anyone can make it on the 26th let me know and I will make myself known!
samozsoon Posted January 18, 2008 Posted January 18, 2008 Hi michael, That sounds good. Was wandering what to do on Aussie day. Btw you do mean Sat 26th dont you? Not the Monday? Sam xx
Guest mutikonka Posted January 19, 2008 Posted January 19, 2008 Yes next Saturday 26th is the 'real' Australia Day, although we also get the Monday off as a public holiday. All the activities (parades, fly-pasts etc) are on the Saturday in Sydney. I'm not sure what the tradition is to do here on Australia day but in our time here we have either gone to the beach or pub or both and just revelled in the fact that we are here! It's always interesting to be down near the Rocks and Harbour on Australia Day as there is so much going on and everyone seems to be in a party mood.
samozsoon Posted January 22, 2008 Posted January 22, 2008 Hi Michael Are you still on for Sat?? If so what time? and whats the address of the pub? Also do you know if there will be any fireworks from the bridge? (daughters asking) One more thing, do you know what the trains will be like on Sat as I imagine the city will be really busy to drive around! Thanks Sam xx
Mr Wotsit Posted January 22, 2008 Posted January 22, 2008 Hi there. Hope you all have a good time down there! But I have to let you know that the rocks area get very, very busy on australia day. And the pubs will be the centre of attention. :wideeyed: Typically as the day goes on, there will be a lot of people in the area. So i would suggest something to identify who you are and a very precise location to meet up. Have fun...
Guest mutikonka Posted January 22, 2008 Posted January 22, 2008 I'll be at the outside drinking area of the Harbour View Hotel from noon onwards, wearing my Akubra (if you don't know what that is - essential Aussie knowledge - Google it!) and a red backpack. Based on last year's experience, there's usually a barbie/sausage sizzle going on the pavement outside and it can get busy around there, but I reckon there will be plenty room for a few more, if not outside then in the main bar. Yes, the Rocks district does get busy on Australia Day but the area round the Harbour View is quieter and more open - there's plenty of room on the grassy area under the Harbour Bridge to spill over onto - though we've always found plenty of room within the pub - it has several separate bars, including an upstairs room with great views. Worst case scenario, if things get really bad we can always move on to the Hero of Waterloo, the Palisade or one of those other heritage pubs within staggering distance. The trains will busier than a normal Saturday on the 26th but I've never found them to be that bad - but then I commute through the CBD every day and am used to the rush hour. The pub is at 18 Lower Fort St, right underneath the southern side of the Harbour Bridge (that coathanger shaped thing). Map is here.
Guest stevetaylor47 Posted January 27, 2008 Posted January 27, 2008 Hey, I saw your blog. Can i ask what camera do you use? Also, i've just moved to sydney and if anyone is going for a few beers let me know okay! My address is stevetaylor15 at msn dot com THanks Steve!
Guest mutikonka Posted January 27, 2008 Posted January 27, 2008 Hi Steve I use a few old film cameras - mainly a Leica IIIa dating from 1937, and also a beautiful 1950s era Contax IIa that I had restored so it now looks and works like new. I love the 'look' that these old cameras and lenses give. But to prove I'm not a luddite I also carry a Ricoh GX100 digital around Sydney with me. By the way I was a bit disappointed with the turnout for the Australia Day "meetup", ie nobody except yours truly. Well you missed a great sausage sizzle is all I can say! I'll let someone else organise the next one ...
Guest stevetaylor47 Posted January 27, 2008 Posted January 27, 2008 Hey, Sorry about that, must have pissed you off! I only just say the thread today, this site actually! Well, if yourself or anyone else organises something let me know. preferably a cool bar with a few beers and i'll turn up no problem... Cheers Steve
