Is this salary going to be enough?

Hi everyone!

Just a quick query. My husband is offered a salary of $62k, will that be enough for a family of 4 to emigrate to Perth for? Would we manage renting a 4 bed in the Rockingham area? And then possibly buying (although I hopefully would have a job by then).

What would he likely be coming out with a month after deductions?

Thanks for any help.

HI BELLA .... AVERAGE COST OF RENTING IN ROCKINGHAM IS $350/week .... THEN THE AVERAGE WEEKLY FOOD BILL FOR FOUR WOULD BE $200 ..... THEN YOU NEED TO ADD ON ELECTRIC /GAS/WATER /PETROL ETC . $62K PER YEAR WOULD WORK OUT AT JUST OVER $1000/WEEK . YOU COULD MANAGE IN THE SHORT TERM ... IF YOU WERE THEN PLANNING TO GET PART TIME WORK AS WELL

If its $62K base salary then it is above national average (approx $57K), if its package (ie base plus benefits, super etc) then its close to average.

In the short term you will possibly manage , however $62K / annum although slightly above the average as a sole income will make sure that you have to watch the pennies very closely . At a guess I would say he would probably clear about $1700- $1900 / fortnight . You'll need to do your maths though ..

Hi Bella

What sort of Visa? If it is a permanent visa then you will likely receive a number of government benefits like family tax benefit and income supplements and rent assistance. These benefits will allow you to live fine unless you need to borrow money for cars or furniture.

If you were to come on a 457 visa or any other temporary visa you will receive no assistance and would probably find things very tight financially.

But it's not always about money is it? going to the beach or having a picnic in the bush or a walk in the sun doesn't cost much but contributes significantly to an enjoyable lifestyle. Only you will know how important the material things are to you. What sort of lifestyle are you seeking? $62K won't offer you many alternatives though.

What sort of lifestyle do you want? BullcreekBobs right. Its not about the money, its about quality of life. You might have a smaller house but you see each other more...........you might have 1 car instead of 2 but the weathers great and u walk everywhere.

Depends what you are looking for in life? Quality or quantity! (He He - ladies, there lies another debate!)

Absolutely not! Quality here too. We spend so much more time together as a couple now than we ever did in the UK. Mum will vouch for that! When OH working I used to go eat at Mums! Funny, I always used to get there as Dad lit the BBQ.......................

Does the location make a big difference when looking at salaries?

Would 60-65k enough in Canberra and Adelaide? I hope this is not OT

House prices and rents are higher in Canberra than in Adelaide (which has the lowest property prices of any of the big cities) so you would definitely have more disposable income on the same salary in Adelaide rather than Canberra.

If two of you were bringing that in in Canberra you would just about be OK. Canberra is very expensive and the average salary here is around $80k and most of the families I know are two income (or on the benefits!) or are independently wealthy.

The visa application is still 2 years down the road and many things can happen before then. I have just accepted a job with the close to relocate to Holland next year  I hope I won't have to give up my Australian dream ...:nah::nah::nah:

I think it is important to know exactly what you will or won't have to pay for under your visa type (do a search on the forum and you'll probably find an answer). Also consider that while the Medicare system covers much, there are gap fees for a lot of health services, especially things like physio. Dental services are not covered under Medicare (with only minimal exceptions) and can be very pricy. If one of your family has health issues, be very careful to include this in your evaluation. Also consider if you have sufficient savings should you need to make an emergency trip home. I think with full health coverage (and government support as mentioned by a PP if you are entitled) it is possible but tings would be quite tight for a family of 6 and being in a precarious financial situation can be harder away from family and friends if something goes wrong.

That's not said to scare you off, rather to ensure you can make contingency plans within your situation with your eyes wide open.
