Hi all,

Haven't been on here for ages due to when we was about to start the process as my partner is a carpenter we got told our son has cerebral palsy. I just cant get moving to Australia out my head! I'm not the brightest spark so would love someone i.e an migration agent and say and yes or no to can we apply before wasting my time and paying for a medical for the answer to be a straight no.

Many Thanks

Hi Kelly

Now I am not an expert on this subject, but I just wanted to try and give some response as you hadn't had one yet. As I understand it, the main purpose of the medicals seems to be to evaluate how much (if any) help a person may potentially require in regards to their medical condition, and how much this might cost the country/government.

I think it may depend if your child needs. e.g. if he has any regular physio, speech therapy or medication. I understand that CP can be hughly variable, with some having such a mild form that it barely inhibits their day to day life at all, where as others are much more impaired by it, and need a lot of essential personal care. It really may depend where your so falls within this.

I know my answer isn't really very helpful, I hope someone who has maybe gone through this may post later and be able to tell you much more than I can. I have seen that a lot of people, with many varying conditions have still been able to emigrate. Your sons CP may not mean the end of that dream. You only need to take a look at the CP atheletes taking part in the Paralympics right now to see how this condition doesn't have to stop people being whoever they want to be! :)

Good luck.

Did you  managed to get visa ?

Hi All, we have a girl with mild palsy in hand and 2.5 years old. She has hold objects , has good strength in her hand and can touch her head. She has some stiffness while lifting hand above 90 degrees. Can any one suggest the outcome of medicals and also your experiences if you passes or not

. How well she is now does not really matter. What they look at is, how much will her treatment cost over her lifetime?

There is a threshold and if she is likely to cost more than that, your visa will be rejected

so how can we understand her treatment costs even before we go for Medicals.. Right now in India she is not going for any treatments as such.

The parents do only PT at home

Thanks

You need to ask your doctors what kind of treatments your daughter will need in the long-term.  If she is expected to recover then there should be no concerns.

The problem is for cases like this doctors wont give a static answer, they will say it might be this or that?? 😞

Will still try to see what our doctor says..

Hi @Marisawright , I spoke to the kids doctor and we are very wrong in categorising the condition as cerebral Palsy, The condition is a birth injury called OBPI (Obstetric brachial plexus injury), which is a nerve injury at birth. The doctor said this has nothing to do with brain and intellectual well being, its only physical hand issue which can be strengthened with PT and in few cases might beed a modquad surgery..

I want to understand how to calculate possible medicare expenses (per 40000 AUD limit) before we go for medical tests

Thanks

There you go, you have made a good discovery. It does not sound as though your daughter will need expensive lifetime treatment so you should be fine.

But I just wanted to make sure , is there a way we can get this cost of treatment calculated with some one or any insurance company..

No.  You will need to get advice from your doctor about what level of intervention may be necessary then - as always - the usual advice is to contact one of the registered agents who specialise in medical conditions and get their opinion as to whether your child will exceed the threshold or not. George Lombard, Peter Bollard and a few others now have medical specialists on their team.
