Gosh you're all organised if you know where you're going to live already. Have you already been over for a recce?

We are about 20 minutes south of there (Eatons Hill) and my kids are younger so can't be much use.

Lots of Brits up that way so sure you'll meet a lot. I was at a shop up there recently and heard so many British accents.

Big bonus to the area is the Costco coming next year! Probably won't help the traffic issues mind.

on a recce sept, yes very organised lol, we live in nsw at the moment, do you live in north lakes ? xenon

No, I live in Brighton, just south of there. The shopping centre is very convenient. I believe they're even getting an IKEA. I know someone who lives there though (*). She says there are one or two other British people here and there.

Surprisingly, for a new development, there doesn't seem to be enough ADSL connections available.

(*) North Lakes, I mean. Not IKEA.

North lakes is supposed to be teeming with Brits

It's a furphy. Being a relatively new development that is still growing it attracts folk of all nationalities. I don't know of anyone already settled in their own home elsewhere that would dream of living there if they were looking for a move. The developers (successful) strategy was to promote at exhibitions/shopping mals abroad and interstate and therefore attract many "incomers" who would be ignorant of the initial "isolation" and commute. Since then the highway has widened and more amenities /infrastructure put in place so many who were initially dissapointed, have stayed put.

"On the ground" I have never heard that the place is full of brits...................the only place I've heard it mentioned is on migration forums and perhaps the perception is there because of the "chit chat" in a public arena between folk who are moving there.................half a dozen folk talking about North lakes on a forum seems to give some the impression that they are a majority, when in fact they are a very small minority.

Hi good luck with the move.

my family and I live in north lakes and have done for over 6 years. we love it here though it may not be everybodys ideal choice. we like the newness of the housing stock and new facilities that have been added as the suburb has grown. we know brits in the area fom school, south africans, a few kiwis and a few aussies to add to the mix.... :-)

we have a young child attending st benedicts catholic school

we are on our 2nd house so it cant be that bad!

would be happy to answer any questions you may have if i can.

kind regards

I can't remember the exact number of Brits there (sure the info is easily available). I think percentage wise it's up near 20% which is quite a lot. I lived there 5 months very unhappily. It isn't for everyone. Then again, I don't like estates, I don't like shopping centres and I especially don't like estates attached to shopping centres so it was never going to work for us. We all make mistakes. Good luck with it. Some people like it there so hope you'll be happy. And remember, if you don't, you can always go elsewhere. A lot of people don't end up in the suburb where they started.

PS the comment re ADSL is very true. I was gobsmacked about that when we moved there. Even out in the Boonies in NZ you get better internet connection. Chances are you'll end up on wireless. Be prepared to tough it out with Telstra for a discount as it is very costly (even with the discount. We had to insist on no live streaming at all - including Skype while we lived there). Loving the freedom of being able to Skype friends again now that we've moved!

HI Nicola57

Good luck also with your move

I would highly recommend St Benedicts. Its a lovely school. We looked at a number of different school options for our daughter including both state and private before settling on st benedicts. A lovely campus with fantastic teachers and support staff. They havent lost any of the values of a small school as it has grown. We loved the fact that eventually they can offer p-12 in one shared campus and that our daughter can go through her schooling with a core group of the same children. As I said, we did our research and visited/interviewed a number of schools before we decided on the school and we feel we have made the right decision.

Hope this helps.

My partners children both go to St.Benedicts-it's a fine school with a good reputation. The head teacher is a very nice guy who cares about the well being of his pupils.A good choice.

With regards to the amount of Brits living in North lakes-The local Aussies like to call North Lakes 'Little Britain'!!!Apparantely this has something to do with NL coming up first on a search engine when living in Australia was typed into Google Search!

We hope to be moving out in January 2012 and are looking to move to the north lakes, area maybe Cashmere/Eatons Hill. We have two kids, boy aged 10 and girl aged 7, they will be going to St Pauls School, in Bald Hills. It would be nice to meet up.

If you are looking at schooling in Bald Hills why not try Strathpine, Bald Hills and Bracken Ridge........ or even Joyner and Bridgeman downs ..... travel from Eatons Hills to Bald Hills for the school run could be heavy on traffic. There is also Albany Creek and Aspley with the older houses and bigger land areas

Before you spend all that money on St Pauls, I would take a look at some others chools. St Pauls is good, butt IMHO, that doesn't justify their very high fees.

Opinions can be quite divided over St Pauls (as they are with most schools - anywhere in the world!). I have friends who have kids there and love it and I know other people who have moved their kids out of there but that is just the way it goes. I'd also suggest not living in North Lakes if they're going to St Pauls. The areas suggested above would be better for St Pauls and you are more likely to meet like minded people.

You were probably lucky. It's a very common problem there. I'm sure there are people who are fine but it's wrong that they should have so few portals for such a huge place. No matter to us now as we don't live there anymore but it is definitely a problem in NL. You either strike lucky or you don't!

Thank you for the advice. We will be having a good look around for the best place to live when we get there as we will be renting for the first few months. With regard to St Paul's we did have a look around the school when we visited in 2010 and although it was a quick visit it appeared to be a nice school, do you have any other suggestions in respect of fee paying schools? Ideally we need to be in the northern suburbs.

Our budget for our house is between $750,000 and 1 million, are there particualr areas you would recommend?

With that budget, not Bald Hills..........it's an "older suburb" and shall we say it...............not likely to know what a budget of a million is like, unless it's been ripped by a ram raid from an ATM...................Look at the better estate at Petrie on the Dayboro Rd.............I'm out of my depth here..............can someone take over please.

How north do you need to be? With your budget you could live in the inner north west close to very good govt primary schools in lovely family area's if you wanted to...but you may have your heart set on the outer north?

shefg, if you've decided on St Paul's, then I'd get a rental in one of the areas nearby and decide from there. It's impossible to decide when you're not living here. I don't like recommending schools as it is such a personal thing and different schools suit different children. The only thing you can do is visit and get a feel for the place and even then, you can make a wrong decision. There are a lot of fee paying religious schools around here (my kids go to one of them). They are heavily subsidised by the church so they are a lot cheaper than St Pauls but they are quite heavy on religion (for obvious reasons) and not everyone likes that.

That's a nice budget you have for a house. For that sort of money you could live somewhere really nice! You'll get a feel for where you like when you're here!

Yes Bald Hills is an older suburb in parts,I have owned a house there for over 30 years and it does have a lovely feel to it but there are also new areas ...... but I would not buy on the Bracken Ridge side of Bald Hills due to it being built on old flood areas...... .............. try Bridgemans Downs, Aspley along and behind Mandrell Terrace, Brighton and Taigum, Petrie is an older suburb as well unless you by in the built up area or around Lake Kuwongbah and North Pine Dam..... you could also try Cashmere and Youngs Crossing ............ if you want acreage ........ or if you want an outstanding house you could always buy the land and build
