I'm a sparky - I'm looking to go into the mining industry when I get over (short term to earn a bit of cash) From what I've been led to beleive you will have to get a load of safety quals before you will get in.
Guest Gavin and Jordanna Posted January 13, 2008 Posted January 13, 2008 hi tom im a machine driver going in for the same reasno as you may be a year or 2
skippy Posted January 13, 2008 Posted January 13, 2008 Heaps of mining jobs going in WA, I think it's 3 or 4 weeks on and one week off, they pay your fare home and back each roster, a friend of a friend of mine here in NSW works over there and comes home once a month, wages are around $1,000 a week or more with board and lodgings thrown in, he works in the tool store for a contract company, it may be 12 hour shifts though, not sure. Many work for a couple of years and buy homes around Perth & retire early, there are also coal mining jobs going in Queensland too, but you need qualifications for those jobs.
Guest Gavin and Jordanna Posted January 13, 2008 Posted January 13, 2008 Hi Jo and Paul, Are the licences hard to get? and do you have to pay for them yourself? and how long will it be till the tunnel is completed? My wife and i are moving to brizzy at the end of March 08.Sorry for all the questions, Just getting close now and wev got no jobs yet!
Guest Gavin and Jordanna Posted January 13, 2008 Posted January 13, 2008 Hi Skippy, cheers for that, hours no prob used to 12/14 a day here in the uk. Like the idea of coal mining in brizzy as movin there in march 08, Would they fly me out from brizzy though?
Guest Tom the Pom Posted January 13, 2008 Posted January 13, 2008 wages are around $1,000 a week or more . There's loads more to be earned if you are a skilled worker - $2000 plus per week The shifts are long and it's hard work but you aren't doing it for ever!!! I'm doing it for the money!!!

It's only the iron ore mines in WA that pay your flight home, the coal industry only give you a job and a little house, these mining towns are at least 2 to 3 hours drive from the coast. Blackwater & Emerald are in the coalmining belt.
Guest Gavin and Jordanna Posted January 14, 2008 Posted January 14, 2008 Hi tom, what qualifys as a skilled worker? When are you going over?
Guest Gavin and Jordanna Posted January 14, 2008 Posted January 14, 2008 Thanks for the advice everyone, I'll keep pondering, Mining is looking good though!
Guest Tom the Pom Posted January 14, 2008 Posted January 14, 2008 Hi tom, what qualifys as a skilled worker? When are you going over? I mean like trades - I'm a sparky so I had to go through the TRA process (Vetassess now). Even though I have had my trade recognised I still have to get my licence in Oz before I can legally work. I'm looking to be in Oz a year in April (2009). Sounds like a long time but it's not!!!
