Guest SupportPants Posted January 4, 2012 Share Posted January 4, 2012 If you are a nurse I think you can get PR and skip the 457 (tied to the employer) years before applying for PR. Mackay isn't one of the nicer places in Australia but it does have plenty of beaches and the weather is nicer than higher up - where the humidity is intense. It's friendly and very much a working town without the transient tourists or grey nomads. The main gripe has to be that its alot more expensive than other areas of Queensland due to the mining money. Eating at a restaurant that would cost $20 for a main course in Cairns or Airlie Beach costs $40 here and accommodation is very high and difficult to find. Check out http://www.realestate.com.au to see how far your money will go. If you are in nursing and there are options elsewhere in Qld I'd avoid Mackay and Gladstone - as a far greater % of your money will be disappearing in rent.
