De facto Visa. No news but had to send passport off?

Me and my partner have applied for a defacto visa. They received our front loaded application 3 weeks ago and three days later we were given a case officer and asked to send off his passport with a forwarding address in oz. The e mail did not say the visa was granted and we have heard nothing since. I thought they would only ask for the passport if we had the visa. Is this normal and does anyone no how long it should be taking to hear something or for our passport to be returned. Just worried in case something has got lost. Thanks for any help!

I read another post on here, where exactly the same thing happened. I don't believe they ask for your passport unless they want to give you a visa - so I'm pretty sure you're all ok!
