Perthbum
Just wonder if you get travelling time in jobs in oz? I know some people travel for a few hours there and back especially on the building and the traffic in the mornings...what jobs get travelling time and even a fuel allowance....I could do with knowing. Paul1Perth
Thought you'd be right up on that PB, having been a tradie in Perth. I know my Son get's travelling time and some sort of allowance for using the car. They also get RDO's (rostered days off) that the union negotiated. Everyone on the union agreement gets the same sort of deal so I guess most tradies. The RDO thing is pretty good. They get 2 per month.

No one on the building sites I ever worked on got travelling time, you were expected to be there at 6.30am and leave at 5.
wakeboard1980
Travel allowance is part of some workers agreements, would depend really on who you are working for. It was mainly to cover the cost of travel, not the time it takes. When I used to get it it covered the cost of the train ticket to and from the city. Que Sera Sera
In the Uk anyway its a contractual right not an employment law right, so in other words its down to your employer to stipulate whether you get it or not, so I imagine its the same here. Paul1Perth
No one on the building sites I ever worked on got travelling time, you were expected to be there at 6.30am and leave at 5.30 Were you working for cash in hand or something? or not in the union? My son starts work around 6:30am, at least I hear him leaving for work around 6:00, but he finishes around 3:30. He's usually been to the gym for an hour by the time I get home around 5:30. I know he got a company van for a while and I thought he'd like that but he said he would rather have the allowance and travelling time.
Johndoe
You're right Paul. All the tradies I know knock off at 3.30 or 4. PB must have been working in the dark seeing as he once stated that it was dark at 5.

Like a previous poster said it is a contractural thing not an employment right. did your payslip show any allowances?

wakeboard1980
So in answering your original question, you would have to research the company you will be going for a job with and find out what their wages and conditions are. All companies will vary, and from state to state as well. Where are you going back to?

Paul1Perth
He's a sparkie. Did you never get the RDO's either? He does overtime sometimes but knocks back a lot of cashies. He likes his weekends and time off to himself too much. He's just in the process of changing jobs to FIFO so better not put down his company. wakeboard1980
I do know guys that would do 1.5 hrs each way into Sydney, on the train its not really that hard on them. They earn good money in the city thats why they do it. I would say its normal (to me anyway) to travel up to an hour each way. Over that you would look at getting something a bit closer. I have been on salary for the past 8 years so it's swings and roundabouts for me. At the moment its only taking me 30 mins and as we aren't busy the days aren't as long, it will change over the next few months though. If you are happy with the money you are getting then I suppose the travel allowances may be irrelevant, for me now and before, not getting a specific travel allowance hasn't bothered me as I always negotiated a good salary for myself that took everything into account.
