Posted for info - not sure it makes the slightest difference as I thought they were pretty strict already.

A SET of tougher character guidelines released by the federal government will target visa holders who have committed a serious crime.

Immigration Minister Chris Bowen said the new ministerial direction on character decision making will include violent or sexual crimes.

Non-citizens who commit such crimes should generally expect to be denied the privilege of coming to or remaining in Australia, Mr Bowen said.

"It identifies the considerations I believe to be important in deciding whether to exercise the discretion to refuse or cancel a person's visa on character grounds," Mr Bowen said in a statement on Sunday.

"The government is committed to protecting the Australian community from risk of serious harm."

The new guidelines will come into effect in September and will apply to all character decisions made by the department and the Administrative Appeals Tribunal on or after that date.
