Guest Francine
Hi All Well, the shippers are coming next week and after a lot of deliberation, we have decided not to take our furniture as we are ready to replace most of it anyway. We have estimated that we will need about 140 cubic feet of a shared container for personal stuff, Wii, PS3, DVDs, CDs, bikes and some of the kids' toys. Did anyone else just take a few personal items and if so do you regret not taking more? Is it really that expensive to buy things over there? We are heading to WA. Now the move is quickly approaching, I am starting to panic about everything! Is this normal??!!! Thanks in advance x
Rupert
If you are sure you are going to replace it anyway then there is not much point in bringing it. Things will be expensive here, as much as anything because you are presumably going to have to buy things using £ savings initially and the £ does not go very far these days. Guest Francine
Thanks Rupert. We are renting a fully furnished holiday rental for the first 4-6 months so at least we don't have to rush into buying stuff straight away and can buy bits gradually and when they're on offer. I'm hoping this is a good move!
BackToAdelaide
It seems the majority of people on here prefer to take more rather than less, but it will always be different depending on your situation. We only shipped four tea cartons of personal effects when we moved eg souvenirs (I'm an Aussie who was living in the UK for some years), DVDs, books, clothes (only the good stuff, gave lots away). We were renting so all the whitegoods were part of the house so the only big items we had were bed, lounge and a few shelves/drawers etc. We decided they weren't worth enough, nor were they nice enough, to bother with the hassle and expense of shipping. Of course, if we'd had a house full of stuff we loved it could have been different. We also enjoyed starting with a clean slate and getting everything to complement each other and also fit with the house. I'll admit we had the advantage of moving back into the house I already owned here so I could visualise how our old stuff would have looked here. The other benefit was not having to wait for a container to arrive. We stayed with my parents for 3 weeks while we got settled and shopped for furniture essentials then moved in as soon as the fridge was delivered! One other factor was having our furniture right up until we moved out of the rental place in the UK. We arranged for a local charity to take it all so they turned up with a big truck and two fit young men (!!) and took it all. We just stayed at a nearby hotel for a few nights while we tidied up loose ends before flying out. So that was our good deed done for the year I don't think there's anything we wish we'd brought as we have nicer stuff this time round. But I appreciate most people will be well established with a house full of things so it's up to you.

Luckily, we have sold most of out furniture here and they are coming to collect on the weekend before we fly on the Monday so we are able to stay in our rental right up until we go. I am starting to feel more positive about my decision!
calNgary
We brought no furniture ,just 18 boxes of kitchen ware, personal stuff etc etc.. In hindsight i should have brought my tumble dryer as it wasnt old and my fridge freezer but other than that i wouldnt change a thing. Our old sofa etc wouldnt have fit in this house anyway and you can get some great bargains here in the sales or second hand so we bought as we needed. It worked for us. RockDr
to be honest if you're going to replace soon, then it's cheaper to buy over here than to buy everything new and ship it and pay tax, or ship the old stuff AND buy new stuff to replace it. The personal things are what make a place a home, not the furniture. Sounds like you've made a good decision, so stop worrying about it
Chardy
We are going to buy 3 new kids beds with trundles and mattresses and a new dining table and chairs as they look to be silly money in OZ, together with new bedding, towels, crockery, pans and cutlery. It should all still go in one 20ft container with the rest of our stuff (which is still in good nick) and as far as tax goes the shippers will re wrap it all to make it look used. Your decision at the end of the day but good luck !

BackToAdelaide
can i ask who you used to ship a few boxes? i only have some clothes and books and personal things as well thanks We used PSS. Wasn't super quick (about 3 months) but then I think it always takes longer when you're not getting a full container.
