hi all,

i have been told with my skills as a plant operator loading shovel,360 excavator, forklift, that i would stand a very good chance of getting a job in mining i like the idea of fifo as i would be going alone so no family stress. Now i know mining is hard to get in to if not dam near impossible unless you know someone.

but i am going to try anyway i have put a cv on seek.com sent a few cv's to mining companys and recruitment agencys applyed for few jobs etc. now i dont expect to hear anything as i am sure they are swamped with cv's. anyway from what i have seen none offer sponsorship and i am unsure how i go about finding sponsorship so a dead end.

i tryed to look up state sponsorship but that is just a minefield of confusion are plant operators even able to get state sponsorship from what i have read no they cant so that is another dead end.

my next problem is you need experience most are 12 months mine experience, now i dont work in mine industry in uk there aint many mines to be worked in uk, so how can you possibly get mine experience. and there dont seem to be many trainee jobs going to introduce plant operators to mine sites so we find another dead end.

i have seen one of them Jobs Expo is coming here end of year are these worth going too, i have seen some ppl say they ok but most saying they waste of time.

at 31 i am still young and have good machine tickets but it is no were near enough it seems!!!!

Hey there, like mrs keily says - get onto BGC and see if they still have anything. They are the only company that i have found that can sponsor plant operators. Your skills arent the problem, its just the visa rules. Dont even ask me - its mind boggling :goofy: I wont go into it all or i'll have you snoring!

so go onto their website and apply. they were looking for excavators, dumptrucks, rollers etc. 4/1 roster and the construction managers are meant to be heading out November, im not sure if the plant operators go out the same time but just thought id warn you and give you a timeline

You wont get into mining from the UK unless you have experience, even people in australia find it hard to get into.

Tbh your only chance at the moment is BGC. As you know plant operators arent on the skills list, its really hard to find a sponsor. a company has to arrange something called a labour agreement to sponsor them which takes quite a long time and a lot of effort so i dont think many companies bother with it. I've looked for a company with one for well over a year and i've had no luck. There was one in Kalgoorlie that had one but they didnt respond to anybody who applied.

Here is the job advert for BGC - you've missed the interviews but maybe they'll still be hiring, the interview wasnt even a proper interview (if that makes sense!) certainly wasnt anything that you couldnt do on skype.

CIVIL OPPORTUNITIES IN AUSTRALIAWe are currently seeking expressions of interest from experienced personnel to fill the following positions:

  • General Foreman / Section Foreman
  • Earthworks Gangers
  • Allrounder Operators – Earthmoving Plant (Dozers, Excavator, Grader, Loader, Compactor/Roller)
  • Dump Truck Operators

The successful candidates will be required to have 3 years’ experience, a relevant CSCS card qualification and be able to provide a minimum of 3 work references. All positions will be regionally based and will “fly-in-fly-out” from Perth, Western Australia on a shift roster.

This is a great opportunity to relocate to Australia and work with our teams on various Civil projects.

i think the expression of interest ones were just for australians and people with PR, we sent out cv for that too but only heard back about the UK ones. Hopefully your not too late, maybe they'll be taking more people in later in the year. dont give up :)

I would say that your chances of getting into mining with a 360 and forklift are slim.

Diggers that are used in mining are nothing like 360's. You can fit a 360 into the bucket of a mine digger. They are highly specialised equipment. Here, 360 permits are two a penny and likewise with f/lift/ Fork lift is very rarely used as the smallest thing similar would be a 470 IT.

In construction things like 360's are used but in mining no. We have a couple of 360's but not full time operators. Instead guys who are qualified in other areas jump on them as required.

Exploration companies do use 360's but at the moment exploration is pulling back a lot. Also, when ever I take on exploration field staff I look for people who have a lot of outdoor sort of experience such as farmers

i would tend to agree with you verystormy the machines we have in this country are nothing compare to what they have over there and the companys that are looking to Sponsor ppl from here know that

And from this country all you are going to get are small machines, And if you are a competent operator on these machines then there no reason you cant learn something bigger.

biggest machine i drive is a cat 950 again big here but prob the smallest loader they have over there, a 360 ticket and a f/lift ticket just helps to show your a competent operator i think anyways :)
